How does your opthamologist test your eyes? I have glasses, so have had plenty of eye exams in my life. The way it's been done for quite a few years was to first look into the computer, which automatically senses how the eyes focus, and then fine tuning is done the old fashioned way...you know the which is clearer, 1 or 2, 2 or 3, etc...

I was at a new eye dr (new to me--some of my family goes there) and he didn't do the fine tuning. I asked him about it and he said that he goes with the computer reading. I had pink eye, so he couldn't finish the eye exam, and I'm supposed to go back to him in another week. The only reason I went to him was I could get in a lot sooner, but I do still have an appt set up with my old eye dr for later next week, and I'm thinking of cancelling with computer dr and just going back where I'm more familiar.

However, if this is how most of the eye drs do it now, I may just stay with this guy.

So what is the process at your eye dr?

I've asked my eye doctor why she doesn't just use the computer and she says the fine tuning by hand is an important part, the computer can't do it all. I also have an astigmatism and the over-40 eyes thing going on. She has me in toric lenses and one eye is a little less corrected for close-up vision. I love it, I can SEE STUFF CLEARLY!!! Sounds like you should stick with your original doctor.

i wear glasses and I'm diabetic and have to have my eyes examined yearly, rather than every two years. My doctor still does the which is better, and flips the lenses in that big old machine (you sit in the chair and the metal eyes come down and you look through them at the digital projection of the eye chart on the wall. They seem like a fairly modern practice but I guess i don't know if this is an outdated way of doing things.

My opthamologist uses all the old fashioned hands on like you mentioned: visual, refraction, muscle, eye pressure, etc. This was the first year he also suggested an Optomap – the Panoramic 200 Retinal Imaging System that took computrized pix. It was an xtra $40. chg, but I like the idea looking at the inside of my eye, specially
since I have a small cataract starting and we'll be able to monitor the growth along with any other future problems. Sending get well wishes on your pink eye! :flower3:

Hmmm, I think I need to go back to my old eye doc. I have never liked this new practice...I've dealt with them when 2 of my kids have gotten contacts, but their dad says he's good. I'm thinking not. ;)

Pink eye's all better. The doctor last week did notice that one of my eyes shows signs of early glaucoma. I honestly did not need something else to worry about, but it could be nothing.
