Extra Security

I think the costume thing is mainly to limit masks and clothes that can hide clothing, ie robes, cloaks. I don't know if they can do anything about most costumes. How do they define a costume? I wonder if Universal will limit HP robes. That doesn't seem like a good business strategy.
If a terrorist is intent on doing major harm, age of the suspect isn't going to matter. It is a short-sighted policy, based on fear that actually does nothing.

This is all an overreaction, and an ineffective one at that. Random screenings are security theater at best. I don't get the costume ban, either. I can see barring full face-covering masks and such (don't they already prohibit that?), but a flat "no costumes" policy will really ruin MNSSHP. The toy guns they sell are pretty much either Star Wars style or Pirate guns, neither of which look particularly real.

It sounds trite, but we're letting the terrorists win.

Frankly, I'm just a little bit concerned that suddenly, all three major attractions (Disney, SeaWorld, Universal) have implemented additional security measures on the same day.

I've reached out to the reporter at the Orlando Sentinel and they are currently checking with law enforcement to see if there are and specific, credible threats at play.

I agree with all of that!

Now they have metal detectors in use at MK. This otta slow down things during their busiest time of the year

WDW has been a target since 9/11.

Sure, of course. So, they decide that today is the day for metal detectors... And Universal decides that today is the day for metal detectors... And SeaWorld decides that today is the day for metal detectors...

I'm not a fan of coincidence... Sorry, not trying to scare anybody.

I don't think a specific threat had anything to do with it. I think the increasing crowds for the upcoming holidays at all three places had everything to do with the reasons for implementing metal detectors.

I completely agree and am not justifying any of these "security" measures. It's mostly about liability for the corporations and not really true safety. Not that I believe there is such as a thing as safety.

However, unless you enjoy getting a friendly pat down, I would suggest steering clear of large, loose fitting clothing/costumes. I have had my fair share of them, including under my shirt right after 9/11, so I think I will pass on that experienceo_O

There might be threats, but probably just from their insurers that they had better "beef up" security.

Honestly, if someone wanted to shoot up WDW, why wouldn't they just shoot up all the people waiting in line for bag check and a trip through the metal detector?

Think for a moment about how ridiculous this is.

Could also be as easy as one vendor of security gates sends one truck to the area to demonstrate the product. Hit all your potential customers in one trip. Demonstrate at a busy time to show how little impact it is on the guest experience. Sure it's a big leap, but so are all these other guesses based on very little info.

Actually this appears to be entirely a reaction to the one lawyer trying to bring a gun into the park. If if was a terrorist concern EVERYBODY would be going through the metal detectors. This is just a way to direct people with suspicious bulges in their pocket for further screening (and that's why you can't have costumes because you could hide the bulge). Also odd that they would hire a third party security force to do it (Especially Disney)

Probably an edict from Orlando... (EG This isn't happening in California, right?)

From the 60s-90s, we had the Military Industrial Complex. Now, it's the Feardustry, as DH calls it:sad2:

Rumors say it's going to be happening at DLR, but I haven't seen any pics/confirmations.

EDIT: Forgot to say "Darn lawyers". How come there's no emoji of an old guy shaking his fist:)

FTA (Orlando Sentinel one): The changes extend outside Orlando. Disneyland and Universal Studios in Hollywood are also installing the detectors.

DL has some big backups at bag check already. I'm glad we're not heading back any time soon before they get this worked out.

I don't get the no toy guns policy either. I understand not wanting to sell realistic guns but the pop guns they sold at pirates (all wood) were really cool along with the "space blasters" in Tomorrowland.

Are they going to take out the frontierland shooting arcade next?
