Extra Security

wdwmagic has pics of the metal detectors installed for today. They will only take a random sampling of guests.

I really hope it isn't true that costumes for adults will be banned at Halloween parties too. That's the whole reason I go!!

The article in the Orlando Sentinel states that the ban includes at Halloween parties.

I appreciate what WDW does to keep us safe. But a small number of metal detectors, and a random sampling of guests...this just comes across as more security theatre than actual security that significantly enhances the security they already had in place.

Wow. No costumes at MNSSHP? That was a good portion of why we went to MNSSHP! Dressing up as a family as Rapunzel, Flynn and Pascal (our 15 month old DD) was the absolute best experience!

I know!

Exactly!

I wonder if ticket sales to the parties will drop?!

I'm glad my son can still wear a costume into the park. Just bought a new Jedi costume for him custom made.

I would say at least double the "visible" security I've seen in past December trips.

They were everywhere-it felt good seeing them.

I would agree with this for sure. This was our first true December trip, but in ALL of our trips, including 12/31/2014 to MK, this was definitely the most visible we've ever seen security. I've always known they are all over in much less obvious ways, but this time we both remarked to each other about the Orange County sheriffs in uniform and such. We also noticed a marked increase in K-9 officers as well. I personally felt really good seeing them too. If only I didn't have such an urge to pet the K-9s haha! (Don't worry, I never dare try - I just smile lovingly at them!)

This is what the Sentinel article says of the changes:

1) Metal detectors at park entrances - random sampling, not everybody will have to go through them
2) Sales of toy guns discontinued (wonder if that includes Buzz Lightyear blasters or Star Wars blasters, that sort of thing)
3) No costumes on guests age 14 or older (likely this means a full costume, not a Mickey hat or a Minnie Mouse dress) at all times, including Halloween parties at MK

If the MNSSHP thing is true, ticket sales should be much lower. We were going to be on a 5 year hiatus from traveling in October, so if it's true, that helps take the sting off. I'm glad we went out on a high note with our costumes this year. By the time we can do October again, my kids will be 16 and 18. Lol

I haven't kept up with the Star Wars stuff. I wonder if guests were intending to go in costume?

I've always wondered why there isn't a security check before you get on Disney transportation? The ferry and monorail hold a lot of people why not check 1st then go straight to park since you'd be already checked? I'm sure there has to be some variables in not thinking about.

I had been hoping it would be announced as ok to wear costumes for the 18th. We were going to see the movie dressed up them head to dhs after. Looks like that part is a no go.

According to the Orlando Sentinel "Disney World is also discontinuing the sale of toy guns and banning people 14 and older from wearing costumes – even at Halloween parties. "

If that announcement stands, I expect the Halloween parties at Disney to come to a screeching halt in the next couple of years. People go to Halloween parties to dress up, not to collect crappy candy. :sad2:

I think the costume thing is mainly to limit masks and clothes that can hide clothing, ie robes, cloaks. I don't know if they can do anything about most costumes. How do they define a costume? I wonder if Universal will limit HP robes. That doesn't seem like a good business strategy.

I still remember the entire interaction we had with Rapunzel and Flynn Rider at that party w/DD as Pascal. My parents even dressed up! They had capes and crowns and were Rapunzel's parents. I haven't seen them dress up in 25 years!
