We just got back a week ago and we went right up to splash mountain at midnight and they sad sorry ride was closed now. It had been fine all day and people were riding it right up until midnight. In turn the other rides were much busier all the way until 2:00 a.m. Is this normal for disney to close a ride during extra magic hours ?

If you mean, just arbitrarily deciding to shut it down...
actually, it's not.

But, there are many times when an attraction does need to be shut down due to mechanical or CM issues.
If it's near closing time, they can decide just to rope it off for the evening.

Disappointing, to be sure.

I could be wrong but i thought splash mountain didn't open any more for evening extra magic hours (sure that was the case last August). Going to be a pain this August when BTM is closed for refurb. If this is still the case it will be interesting to see if it's open for the paid for evening hours.

It has come and gone as a PM EMH attraction for the past 2-3 years.

When it first was dropped, they added Tiki Room as a "replacement."
(I cannot think of a LESS equal trade of attractions.)

It was open when we went to evening EMH in November. It is also listed on TP's as one of the attractions opened during evening EMH.

I know the Morning EMH it is not opened.

It wasn't open for PM EMH when I was there the first week in December. I was pretty bummed 8o(

I laughed at the unequal trade comment. Splash would be my #1 attraction in the MK and the current version of the Tiki Birds would come in dead last.

I'm wondering how many guests even know what version of Tiki show is running.

I actually liked the previous version with Gilbert as i find him funny as well as Phil Hartman and Don Rickles in the pre show. The new or old version that runs now is just an abomination IMO. That may put me in the minority but I can't see that show without someone like Gilbert making fun of it. I do like the real bird show at the AK though.

It's interesting that you mention that DAK show (Flights of Wonder.)

FoW has recently been closed for several months as they added a permanent roof to the FoW outdoor theater (That theater -without a roof- has been used for the FoW show for years.)

There's a line in the old/current Tiki Room show where one of the principle bird hosts (Michael) sings:
The bird of paradise is an elegant bird,
It likes to be seen, and it loves to be heard.
Most little birdies will fly away,
But the Tiki Room birds are here everyday.

Well, when the FoW shows began (in limited runs) after the new theater roof was added,
that roof upset one or two of the FoW birds, and...
they flew away!

Yup.
Right out of the theater and into the "wild" of DAK.
They did manage to retrieve the birds... without harm to them, AFAIK.
Recently, they have been running limited shows (or parts of shows) to
help acclimate the confused birds to their new performance space.

So, life imitates art (in a convoluted sort of way, I guess.) ;)
