Our tent and van while camping on Goose Island.

It was a 20 second exposure taken at f/4 and ISO 800. If I wasn't so lazy, I would have knocked the ISO down to 100 and bumped the exposure time to 160 seconds. To do that, I would have had to walk all the way back over to the car, gotten my remote shutter release, and set it up for 160 second exposure. I'm lazy, so I just boosted the ISO and shot it at 20 seconds.

I was really just playing around trying to get a sense for how the tent would "glow" with a lantern in it. I might try a more serious shot at dusk when we go camping out in a swamp in a month or so.

That would be a really cool shot for star trails- but you would probably have needed a much dimmer light in the tent.

I did something like that eons ago back in my film days. There's a technique for it. First, put a lantern on in the tent (battery powered, not gas please). Meter off of the tent to determine how long your exposure should be. Let's say it's 15 seconds. Now, set up the camera to take a 2 hour exposure (or however long you want your star trails to be. Have someone in the tent turn the lantern off after about 15 seconds. If the tent is moonlit, you'll want to have the lantern on for a shorter period of time. Of course, if you've got much moonlight, you probably won't be getting great star trails either.

I took these at California Adventure this past January. I set my camera on a concrete post so that it would stay still. I use a Canon PowerShot SD800IS. The shutter speed was 1/8 second at f/2.8, focal length 4.6mm. This is a point and shoot so I didn't fiddle with it, just used the auto feature. I didn't touch these in Photoshop either, this is how they came out of the camera.

I'll add a few more taken at the MK a few weeks ago- my favorite dark ride. All taken with D300 & 50/1.4.

Nice photos! I love POTC!!! Could you share what ISO and metering mode you were shooting at? Were you in AF, P, M, S, or A? I've seen some really nice shots w/ the D300 at high ISOs. The price on the 1.4 has dropped a little since I started looking at them a few months ago...NAS!!!!
How do you like your Sigma 30mm 1.4?

Thanks- I went back and added the EXIF info on the previous page. These were taken in Aperature Priority at f1.4 with Auto ISO- ISO settings were to maintain a minimum of 1/60 Second exposure. As you can see from the EXIF several shots could not maintain 1/60 Sec even at max ISO 6400. Metering was center weighted average with no exposure compensation.

I just got the Sigma 30/1.4 this week and have not really had time to test it out. Since we have an extra day this month hopefully I will have some test shots with it I can squeeze into the assignment.

I just returned from a business trip and had a chance to wander around Old Montreal for a short time one night. Here are a few shots - all taken at ISO 800, handheld with a Rebel XTi and my favourite lens, my Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5.

I am, overall, pretty happy with these. I have been working on trying to do steady handheld shots, and I think these show some improvement on my technique (or luck, but I'll go with improvement for now...)

Very steady handheld results! Would you be so kind as to share your technique(s) for obtaining these clear, sharp shots at such slow shutter speeds without some kind of IS or VR?

Thanks for the compliment! Most of what I did can be found here on various photography board threads here on the DIS:

• Feet shoulder width apart with one foot forward,
• Arms and elbows close in to my body,
• Set the exposure with the exposure lock,
• Frame the shot and set the focus by half-pressing the shutter release, and
• Press the shutter release while exhaling

I think it might have helped that I had a glass of red wine prior to my stroll - set the right frame of mind and soothes the nerves after a long day at the airport!

I know it's March, but I had a couple from our trip to the Zoo yesterday. These are from the Discovery Zone at the Zoo and all taken indoors and handheld with my Rebel XTi and the nifty 50. I had not used the lens for a while and forgot how much fun it is!

Since these were taken in the last few hours of February I thought I would share a few (okay- quite a few) from our Clearwater Beach area outing last Friday night. Had a great time with a group from Nikon Cafe. Here is my eclectic collection of things that cought my eye.

Finally bought a tripod (a GorillaPod to be exact); and wanted to test my camera with long exposure times. I ALWAYS wanted to get pictures where you can see the stars. I'm a total amateur, so I just recently learned that what you see in the viewfinder, isn't always what you get.....especially when dealing with long exposure times. I was quite pleased with a test shot....

Nice capture Srisons - I like the framing by the trees. I was never able to get such a nice exposure on my Powershot S1 IS for starscapes.

And Gdad, now I have something to look froward to tonight - they block smugmug at my workplace , so I'll have to check your shots out when I get home.
