Exterminate! Dr Who to battle the Daleks again

LONDON (Reuters) - Get ready to hide behind the sofa again -- Doctor Who's arch rivals the Daleks are coming back.

The BBC said on Wednesday that a new series of the cult sci-fi series "Doctor Who" would feature the fearsome robots after the producers reached an agreement with their creator's estate.

The Daleks, which look like upturned trash cans with a toilet plunger coming out of the top, terrified generations of children with their frenzied high-pitched cries of "Exterminate!" during the show's original 26 year run which ended in 1989.

The BBC announced earlier this year it was bringing back the series with Christopher Eccleston, who starred opposite Nicole Kidman in "The Others", as the ninth incarnation of the TV Time Lord.

"As well as coming face-to-face with a number of new and exciting monsters, it's good news that the Doctor will also do battle with his arch enemy the Daleks in a series which promises to surprise and entertain a new generation," said Mal Young, BBC's Controller of Continuing Drama Series.

Doctor Who won an army of loyal fans despite tacky sets and unconvincing aliens, but the BBC promised the new version would take the show into the 21st century.

The series, which also features former pop star Billie Piper as the Doctor's assistant, is due to be broadcast next year.

Dr. Who was my favorite TV program back in the 1980's. I was even an official member of NADWAS (North American Doctor Who Appreciation Society). I still have several hours of Tom Baker episodes on videotape. And there's a Dalek collectible card tacked up on the wall in my cubicle at work. I hope that the new episodes are as cheesy as the old ones.

A Genesis fan AND a Doctor Who fan! You go higher and higher in my estimation with each passing day Galahad. :D

LOL! Thanks Ace. In the 80's, DW would walk into the room when I was watching Dr. Who and she would randomly guess which kind of man-eating plant was threatening the universe this week and half the time she'd be right. I really love the William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker Doctors. John Pertwee was good but sometimes was a bit precious and Colin Baker was OK. The rest kind of lost me. I've had a heck of a time trying to explain a T.A.R.D.I.S. to my younger son.

When I saw the thread title I thought, "nah, can't be". :space:
I was in NADWAS too (back in the 80's). :) Gotta love cheesy british scifii!

Ace, It occurred to me this morning that many plot lines in Dr. Who can probably be traced to the lyrics of "The Return of the Giant Hogweed"! :p

Tom Baker was the man for me.

LOL, yes. Or maybe the other way round.

I'm not really looking froward to the new series though. If it's too high tech and up to date, I don't think it will work. Some things are best left alone and this may be one of them.

"Cheesy British sci-fi"!!!! I'll have you know that when I watched it as a kid, it was cutting edge.

I was always a Tom Baker fan, but then again, he was also the first doctor I saw. I keep forgetting that most people have never seen Dr Who. The other day I made a comment at work about a needing a sonic screwdriver to fix a problem and nobody knew what I was talking about.:confused3

I almost convince my wife to let me name our daughter Tegan after one of Dr. Who's companions. And she nearly agreed. The only thing that stopped me was that I couldn't figure out how to explain to her (and to others) that she was named after someone from a cheesy British sci-fi programme.
