This seems to be a hot topic on here, but what I want to know if there is a outlet in the bathroom to use the hair dryer? Or can I run an extension cord from the outlet on the vanity to the bathroom. It's going to sound strange, but please understand, I need privacy when I do my hair, I suffer from stress induced hair loss, its just terrible, which is why I really for the sake of my self-esteem need privacy. I also read some rooms have hairdryers in the bathroom, but they are awful. I know another post said they provide a hair dryer in a cloth bag now, which is fine, but I need it in the bathroom. Can anyone give me any information how to solve this issue so I can enjoy myself.
Thanks so much in advance for anything

Side note: we are planning on booking Disney Magic if that helps.

I believe the outlet in the bathroom is only for shavers. This is on the Magic, but the one on the Dream and Fantasy said the same thing:

The reason that the hairdryer must be used at the desk is the voltage requirement (or something like that) is too high for the shaver outlet in the bathroom.

As for the OP, maybe asking others in the room to leave (maybe they could go to breakfast?) while using the hair dryer in the room would work? You can't bring your own extension cord, but maybe contacting Guest Services and requesting one might be an option.

Just wanted to give a virtual hug as I suffer from hair loss, as well. :grouphug: Have a great cruise!

To combine what others have said. We were on the Dream in June, and the hair dryer is in a cloth bag in the desk area. The outlet in the bathroom indicates that it's for only plugging in electric razors. If that's really the case, I'm not sure. Maybe Disney guest services could provide a definite answer.

As stated, the hair dryer is at the vanity. There is a curtain between the sitting area where the vanity is and the sleeping area where the bed is that you can use to close off (separate) the rest of the room so you can have privacy while you dry your hair.

The Magic has a powerful hair dryer in the vanity area and I would second the recommendation to close the curtains while you do your hair at the vanity. Other members of your stateroom can sit on the bed and watch TV or sit on the verandah if your stateroom has one. I don't think they allow extension cords but I could be wrong.

:welcome:

The reason the outlets in the bathroom are labeled "For Shavers Only" is that they are not wired to provide the 10+ amps required by a hair dryer. The label on the picture PrincessShmoo shows "20 VA" which means it can handle only 20 watts. Hair dryers run in the 1300 watt range. I apologize for all the shop talk, but all of that means running a hair dryer from that outlet will cause the wires to overheat and is a fire hazard.

As mentioned, extension cords are prohibited. Unfortunately the only way you will be able to use a hair dryer in the bathroom is to use the one in there.

I wish you luck with this and welcome to Disboards!

Here’s an oddball solution that technically, wouldn’t break any rules. Have someone who is comfortable doing it (electrician-type person) replace the power cord on your hair dryer with a cord long enough to reach from the desk to the bathroom. I’m thinking 20 ft would probably do. Then it would be a power cord and not an extension cord. Enjoy your cruise!

We had and used an extension cord on the Fantasy

Extension cords are banned from bringing on the ship and may be confiscated if found in your luggage. However, you can request an extension cord from guest services. However, there are only so many that they can lend out. These extension cords have been approved by DCL electricians to be safe. What you bring from home, may not be.

I found the one in the bathrooms on the Magic to work just fine for me. That said, I'm not particular about my hairdryers and have straight hair that dries fairly quickly. With a kid watching TV while I get ready, it's always been easier that way.

It's loud, but between that and a big round brush, my hair is fine.

Up until a few years ago, DCL had wall mounted hair dryers on the Wonder and Magic in the bathrooms. They were taken out during the huge dry dock a few years ago and replaced with a hand held hair dryer for each room that can now be found in the vanity.

ETA: My mistake, I just don't remember the hair dryer being in the Magic bathroom when we were last on.

OP, I sympathize with your need for a private place to do your hair, but I want to point out a couple of DCL policies that you need to be aware of regarding solutions you and others have proposed:
  • DCL's Prohibited Item List (https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/faq/prohibited-items/list/) does not allow extension cords to be brought onboard. Guest Services does have a limited supply of extension cords available for guest use for a deposit of $50 on a first-come, first-served basis; however, those are US-plugged, 110-Volt cords, which are not compatible with the ship-provided hair dryer in the desk drawer (it is 220-Volts, with a 2-pin European plug, hence the special outlet at the desk).
  • If bringing your own hair dryer onboard and it is a US-plugged, 110-Volt model, it cannot exceed 1500 Watts (most US home-use hair dryers are 1750 Watts or more) per DCL policy (https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/faq/preparing-for-cruise/voltage-limit/). So, please check the first before bringing and attempting to use with the DCL-available extension cord. As pointed out by a previous poster, the outlet available in the actual bathroom is rated for shaver use-only, as it would not support a hair-dryers needed wattage.
  • From our past trips on Disney Magic (as well as in January on Disney Wonder), the wall-mounted bathroom hair dryer is still available for use, just don't expect it to be the most powerful or effective hair dryer you have used.
Based on all of the solutions provided, I agree with using the desk hair dryer and pull the curtain shut for privacy. I hope you have a great cruise.

Thanks this is genius! My husband could probably do this.

Also, thanks everyone for your ideas and links to the information that I need.

As an electrician, I can tell you that such a homemade modification would almost certainly be consficated. Even if it is not, you would be placing your life and other passengers in jeopardy.

The length of the cord would pose a risk. The cord will get warm and possibly melt through the insulation. This could cause a fire or elotrocute someone.

Also, using a dryer in a manner like this is extremely hazardous to the person using it. If the dryer was to short to ground, possibly through a person, there would be no ground fault protector to stop the current flow quick enough to prevent a lethal shock. In addition the wiring inside of the walls could melt and catch on fire.

If it was safe for a hair dryer to have a long cord like this, someone would manufacture one.
