Explosion at fertilizer plant north of Waco, Texas

The Waco Tribune newspaper, in an online account, quoted an emergency dispatcher calling for multiple ambulances and saying, "we have a lot of injured here."

The Tribune said several buildings were reported to be on fire, including a middle school in West, a town of some 2,700 people about 80 miles south of Dallas and 20 miles north of Waco.

This is all just too much.

The photos on the news are stunning. There's a large apartment building that appears to have a huge part of the second floor gone, just blown away.

It's terrible. My friends in Texas are all over twitter. Hearing horrible stories.

ETA - here is what I'm hearing from friends in West on FB and Twitter. The plant was on fire and firefighters were responding the explosion happened. I've heard the "all homes w/in 4 blocks" of the plant destroyed from a friend who's family is in West. A friend near Ft Hood said that helicopters are in and out of Darnell Medical Center...more than they have ever seen.

I'm also hearing that a nursing home near the plant has collapsed and they are asking for more responders there.

That is so sad. Hopefully it was simply an accident, but given the events in Boston as well as the Ricin mailings, I'm sure many people's minds will turn to terrorism. I just hope people will not invent wild rumors like some of the ones that came out of the Boston bombings.

We are 15 miles away with many friends in West. All our friends have been accounted for but two friends have homes that were destroyed. People who are there are saying the scene is awful, worse than you can imagine. Hoping that's not true but hearing it from multiple sources. A nursing home on fire, people trapped inside, school on fire, fire fighters trapped, etc. So scary and sad.

Major news channels are picking this up now. This is so horrible. I know fertilizer is used in bombs..as horrible as this is I hope it was just an explosion and not something else. Prayers to those affected by this.

Until now, West was known for two things: Kolaches and lots of Czechs. Wish that was still the case.

they've been using the football feld as a triage center, but they've just evacuated that because thre is a second fertilizer tank that is burning and in danger of exploding.

It sounds like I 35 is shut down.
