We are considering renting a vehicle such as a jeep and exploring St. Marteen on our own. Has anyone done this? What is the best place to rent a vehicle, and what is the expected price for 2 adults and 2 teenagers?

We didn't rent a car, but once on the island, we decided to get a taxi to tour the island......and we compared prices. The first guy wanted $75 for 2 hours for a roomy van for 2 adults and 2 kids (10, 2). But we went to another, Mattias, who took us for close to 3 hours for $40 in the family car. Not fancy, but I felt confident in his driving skills (or maybe we were extremely lucky!) He showed us the tourist areas, and then took us inland to some pretty shops, and then to the Dutch side. He was very flexible as to what we wanted to do. And the best was to be able to ask him questions that only a local could answer and explain. My dd(11) got a wonderful education from him, and when ds(2) got fussy, we got recommendations on where to eat, and called it a day.

I rented a car at St Maarten and loved it. There are a couple car rental agencies in the Great Bay Marina, which is about a 10-minute walk from the pier. I've also heard there are some agencies right at the end of the pier but I don't recall having seen them.

I have a map of the layout of the pier in relation to the marina at my web site...
