Explaining your love of Disney to a non-believer

To each his own... As for me and my house, we love to play with the Mouse! :earboy2:

No matter what you do, or how hard you try, not you or me or anyelse will ever be able to put the magic of Disney into anyone. They won't know until they walk down Main Street USA weather they have it or not. Some people are a little slow to get it like myself. I didn't get it until my fourth trip. But know I have it and can't get rid of it.

I've been called a weirdo, given strange looks by friends, gotten the "your going there again, whats wrong with you" line. But they just don't get it, or haven't gotten it yet. I feel sorry for those people.

We have had friends who have gone and come back cursing Disney. Saying "that place is horrible", "that place stinks", "why do you go there all the time". My wife and I just look at each other and shake our heads in sorrow and think to ourselfs, they didn't catch it did they. You can't argue with them or try and set them straight. They just didn't get it. There is nothing you can do to give it to them.

And as Walt said: "I hope we never lose sight of the fact that this was all started by a Mouse."

Meaning (In my interpretation): Don't take things to seriously! Sit back, ride some rides, buy some Mickey ears at one of the 10,000 souvenier shops, and have a great time being surrounded by the beauty, magic, and fantasy that is Walt Disney World.
1st-I love your interpretation of Walt's quote. That is so true.
2nd-My friend has a quote about color guard, but I think the same goes for Disney....Disney, For those who get it, no explanation necessary, for those who don't, no explanation possible.
Just remember that. What a shame that some people never get to go to WDW and some that do go never "get it" or appreciate it.

Thank goodness we have a few couples that we are good friends with who are also hooked. It gives us someone to relate to. My dh was a little slow to come around, but now that he has met some other men who have the Disney addiction, he has kinda given in to it a little more...but he still likes to put it all off on me if anyone questions why we're going THERE again. I don't mind, as long as we keep going!

During my homeroom time last week, I had my Disney music playing softly. One of my 7th graders (who is rather cynical and negative about most things) asked me, "Why do you listen to Disney music?" I told him that it made me happy. He then made some comment about being like Michael Jackson, which he immediately apologized for. I didn't feel too badly about it though, b/c right after that another student said, "I love it when Mrs. Powell plays Disney music. It's put me in a good mood!" (It's also fun to watch 7th graders act out the songs. I've got one who can do a mean "I Won't Say I'm in Love" from Hercules, lol)

Well I don't want to make this a political thread but what sets "us" apart from MJ is that we are truly adults trying to regain a sense of magic from when we were children for a week or two a year. I believe poor Mr. Jackson truly never had the magic and tries to live as a child every darn day of his life. How sad is that?

I took my first trip to Disney World in 1990. I was 39 and had always wanted to go; I guess it was all those years of watching Walt Disney on Sunday nights. Since that time, we have been back at least twice a year. My 2 daughters (20 and 27) grew up on Disney. My 20 year old was on the Disney College Program from August 2003 until January 2004.

Now that the girls are grown - my DH and I are enjoying all the other things Disney has to offer like the Flower and Garden Show and the Food and Wine Festival (much better without the kids).

Just like everybody else here, people ask me why I go back over and over. They just don't get it -- some people never will. But, I don't get why they go back to the beach every year or to Las Vegas to gamble every year.

I always come back to work with my Disney high. I hope one day to retire to Florida and work part time for the Mouse.

I was just thinking about this in the car. I pretty much have 3 things that if feel that way about--Disney (in my case DL more than WDW as I go to DL 1 to 4 times a month but have only been to WDW once), figure skating (more watching than doing), and the most recent addition to the list, Josh Groban. All three take me away from reality, relieve stress, and just plain make me happy. And each does it in a different way and usually one will work better than the others in a give situation. And it's great to have places to go where people just get it, whichever one it is I want to talk about. But since this is the DIS, I guess it's Disney here. I know a lot of people for who one trip to DL every year or two is quite enough and they don't get how I can go so often, but for me, walking onto Main Street is like coming home and getting a great big hug.

I don't know if the love for Disney can be truly explained. It's something you have to feel in your heart. Aren't we all lucky that we "get it"? :earsboy:

That is what I tell people ... you either "get it" or you don't. In that case, there is more room for people like US! :)

My boss is ALWAYS upset when I tell her we are going to WDW. "There are so many places you could be going besides WDW, why do you keep going back" she says ...

Well, I'm lucky with my coworkers. If they think I'm nuts for doing to WDW every year, they don't say anything to me. Heck, most of them do a yearly Outer Banks jaunt, so I guess they know better than to question someone going somewhere "year in, year out."
Actually, a few of them have come to me for Disney planning advice. The first had a wonderful time. The second is going this summer, so we'll see if he thanks me or curses me. :rotfl2:
DH (SkipperBubba pirate: ) is the one with the hypercritical coworkers. They'd all apparently rather go to Cancun and drink like fishes as opposed to going to a "kid's
place" and have nothing to do. So he's given up explaining to them that on our honeymoon last year, besides hitting the parks, we dined at multiple top-shelf restaurants, had a romantic carriage ride, rented personal watercraft and zoomed around a lake (twice), caught multiple fireworks shows, strolled on a beach AND drank like fishes. :rotfl:
OK, OK, we didn't really drink like fishes. But we could have!!!!
Seriously, as cmonroe said earlier, "I'm convinced, the key to catching the WDW bug is related directly to 4 attributes: energy, attitude, knowledge and passion. Not everyone is fortunate enough to experience that."
I totally agree. And just as common sense is not very common at all, not many people are lucky enough to possess all four of those traits. We all may be very grateful that we do.
Cheers,
Q

My position is simple....never try and convince a non-believer about the wonders of Disney......we don't need the crowds!

pirate: I have a friend who I've been trying "convert" for years. She is a mom of three (ages 7,4 and 2) and has never taken her kids to WDW. MY DD is 6 and this June will be her third trip. She looks at me like I'm crazy when I talk about WDW. She doesn't get it and never will. I agree, you either have that extra special something inside of you or you don't. pirate:

I love Disney. My husband is about 8 years away from retirement. I have said to him numerous times. "when you retire, we can move to Florida, and I can get a job working at WDW". He thinks I am Kidding. I'm not. I have not worked for almost 40 years, (except raising my 2 boys and now my 1 grandson). I would absolutely love working there. I think the cast members have the best jobs. You see cast members of all ages. Yes, I definitely would love to work there.
