Explain WOC to me

I haven't been for a few years, so this will be my first WOC experience. I have an idea of what it is (water show with projections/lights, right?), but keep seeing people posting about how/when best to see it. Do you need special tickets or is there a line? How do you get preferred seating (not sure if it has it or not - sorry, been out in the sun way too long today).

Thanks! For some reason I was assuming it was presented like the parades where people just try to find a viewing spot. Off to read more!
