I am not into soccer at all although I did get to see a World Cup game in person many years ago. I do enjoy sports but have never been into soccer.

I see that the first two games ended in a tie. How do you eliminate teams if they end in a tie? Do those four teams have to play again? Why wouldn't they play until there was a winner?

I"m surprised there wasn't a shoot-out.

Teams will play other teams, and I think it comes down, to who has the better win/loss/tie record.

In this stage, all teams play all the other teams in their group (4 teams per group). In this stage, you get 1 point for a tie and 3 points for a win (and no points for a loss). The two teams with the top points in each group, move onto the elimination stage.

There are also a bunch of rules for breaking ties (if teams have the same number of points at the end of the round).

a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup.

option 'g' would probably be a rare thing, but it's there in case everything else is still tied.... must suck for the losing team in that case, if they end up just doing rock-paper-scissors to determine who advances ;)

Once they move to the single-elimination part of the tournament, after group play, then there are no longer ties. At that point they play a 30-minute overtime (not sudden death), and, if still tied, they will go to penalty kicks.

Thanks! I did not know that. Now it makes sense........although I am way too competitive to settle for a tie. That must explain why I never played soccer. It would kill me to play that entire time and just tie.

Apparently the drawing of lots was used in 1990. Ireland and the Netherlands tied for second - drawing lots put one in second (Ireland) and the other in third (Netherlands). However, three teams from each advanced at that time, so both teams advanced. The Netherlands, however, would have faced a tougher team than Ireland (at least in theory) and, had they not been in the top 4 of the third place teams they would not have advanced.

A bunch of hot guys run around kicking a ball.:)

That's really all I get out of it.
