Experiences on AirBnb

Doesn't the issue of legality fall on the shoulders of the person who's advertising their home, not the person staying?

It does, but its quite a scary scene. Recently read about a guy who rented from airbnb, he came back to his airbnb to find that the complex evicted the tenants, and that included him. He had to spend the weekend trying to sort it out. at one point, he basically couldnt fly home to new zealand and he just wanted his passport. He finally found a sheriff that felt bad for him and pleaded with the complex manager to let him get his stuff out. He got most of the stuff, they took his cash and broke one of his suitcases... he flew home on time...

Airbnb is getting ruled out of Anaheim. Im not sure what city has banned it, i would check again of time.

My sister had some funny glitches during a few different stays this past summer. One place advertised AC, it was very hot but she couldn't find any sign of vents or a control for it. Called the owner who told her it just "comes out of the walls". The same place offered two beds but only provided linens for one. She did get money back for a few places that weren't all that they claimed, and says she'll probably never use Airbnb again.

I've used it twice, once my friend booked and the second time I booked. Both times were in Philly for engagement/wedding festivities. The first time I wasn't a fan of the place, but I think that comes down to more of my friend not being as picky as I am. The second time was great. There was a little Mickey friend living there, but that's cities for ya.

I'd use it again, but now I know to make sure that nothing wonky will happen in the city I go to!

As far as I'm concerned, if the place is owned by the person renting it, then they should be allowed to use their property as they see fit. But what do I know? (edit to clarify that maybe 'as they see fit' has some exclusions.)

Totally agree. But the government always has to stick their hands in people's pockets.

I'm using tt for the first time in Ft. Lauderdale over winter break this year. I am a little scared what will happen since I was charged already and I won't even be there for another month and a half. We will see I guess.

Legal punishments do fall on the shoulder of the person offering the home and not the person staying. However, if the place isn't legal they may not let you stay there. Depending on when they get caught you could end up in a pickle either just before your trip or even during.

I've had some great experiences as a couple less than perfect, but I saved a ton of money at each when you consider location/amenities.

The reviews are key - I try to be very detailed as detailed reviews help me in selecting a location. Last year in Chicago, the building I was in had work being done on the other side of the wall from the bedroom where I was staying. I was not happy that the host didn't give me a heads up as I'd taken the train in and really needed a nap. But an apartment a block from Wrigley for $100/night is crazy cheap and was worth it.

We used all AirBnB places on our trip to France in June. 2 weeks worth. The apartment we had in Paris was wonderful and the owner was a gem. 2nd place was in Colmar and again, perfect accommodations. 3rd place in Marseilles was less then expected, but manageable for 2 days. Final place at Disneyland Paris was perfect again. We had no issues at all and saved a ton of money. I would highly recommend it.
