Experienced campers help-Is this safe to tow to the Fort

No 1 Ton Sub available in 2009, biggest they make is a 2500 (3/4 ton) with the 6.0 gasser/6 speed auto.

Seriously though and a bit OT. What do you think the chances that we will have a passenger vehicle available to tow 8500+ lbs.

I am in and out of the market for the 3/4 Sub but good luck finding one. They already are few and far between. My concern is that with current wind in Washington, these will become an endangered animal or extinct like the Excursion. Could the full size van be far off???

There will always be options for vehicles capable of towing over 8500# due to the needs of contractors and business ( assuming any survive the economy ), however I doubt it will ever be a Suburban, at best you will have to look at a crew cab truck.

Historically, subs have been hard to find on the lot, I have had a couple and ordered both of them. As slow as things are right now I would be willing to bet you could get one in as little as 4 weeks.

My personal opinion is that NO ONE should TOW anything from a POP-UP ON UP with anything less than a 1 TON DUALLY DIESEL POWERED TRUCK!:rolleyes1

I see we think a like except you forgot 4x4

I had a 2001 Ford Explorer XLT with the 5.0L V-8 when we got our Jayko Kiwi 23B. With the towing package I was rated at, if I recall correctly, 6000 pounds. The camper, fully loaded with our gear, weighed in just a smidge under 5000. We had the WD hitch and anti sway control. Power was fine - the Explorer could PULL the trailer easily.

The problem was the size of the wheel base on the tow vehicle. Every truck that passed us on the highway blew us all over the road.

One week later we traded the Explorer for an F150 Supercrew with the 5.4 liter V8 and towing package (LOVED that truck). ROCK solid towing for the camper, almost no movement. Nice large wheelbase on the truck made for a stable, enjoyable ride.

Based on my experiences with the Explorer, a vehicle I really liked, I feel the Explorer isn't suitable for towing anything bigger than a popup. That's just my opinion. YMMV.

Ended up trading the Kiwi for a Jayco 26 foot class C, and the truck for a Saturn ION. The ION is my daily vehicle and our toad when we travel with the Motorhome.

me too...I can honestly say...its the best vehicle Ive ever owned. Ive only had it for a few months so far...but Im pretty confident that it aint gonna piss me off any time soon!!

Hard to beat an F150. I've had two! Dodge Diesel currently and happy!:thumbsup2

My next purchase.....(yea, right)

Wonder if it will pull a pop up? ;)

That may be the coolest truck Ive ever seen!!!

Before my '97 Explorer, we owned an '87 F-150. We sold it to a co-worker just before picking up the Explorer in 8/96, and it had IIRC 185K+ miles on it. The guy who bought the F-150 still has it & the last e-mail Rick got from him said the odometer quit working at 325K miles. When my Explorer finally bites the dust (I'm planning on another 160K miles before that happens) I will definitely get another Explorer - if they are still making them in 2021!

Too bad Ford makes such crappy cars. But I'm glad they poured all the money into the truck division.

Kagoguen-Welcome fellow Mainer! Anyway, I think you are just fine to tow. You are in your weight, and especially since you are only 26ft. when towing I think you would be fine. Have a great trip! The ride down is great!

:) Thank-you fellow Mainer.......so from your screen name, can I assume your from the coast? so according to your count down are you going down in October too?
