Experience with sharing on DDP???

Okay I have a question... We are a party of three... DH, DW and DS9.... I have the DxDP and I know my son is supposed to order off the Kids Menu....

BUT is it okay to share my meal with him....as if I dont want my appetizer and he eats it and then eats also from his kid's menu... I know for him eating chicken nuggets and mac and cheese every day for lunch and dinner will be really old fast... I am basicaly trying to give him something other than the typical kid stuff...

Any thoughts?? We are doing a few buffets, but from what I understand they too only have a kids section with the same fare... Please any advise would be appreciated... Oh and we would pay using the 3 TS Credits (2A 1C)

Yes, it is fine to share your meal with your child. That's what we do with our kids. DS was 9 on our last trip and ate most of my appetizers, shared entrees, and basically used his kids meals as backup in case he didn't like the adult fare. DD basically just had a bite or two of our food and was happy with her kids meals, but she will be 8 and doing the same thing on the next trip. The only time sharing becomes a problem (potentially, depending upon restaurant policy) is when you're trying to order fewer meals than people in the party.

At the buffets, kids are not limited to the kids' section. Disney offers that for pickier kids, but they're welcome to choose from the adult options as well.

When my son was younger Toyko Dining & Teppan Edo had no problem with him sharing our meal since we were not sure he would eat anything.

I don't know. Now I am leaning towards not getting the dining plan. I KNOW that we won't be able to eat 4 entrees and 4 desserts per meal. We never have. My only hope of salvaging the plan was if we could share. And now it seems like it would be too stressful to worry about that! I don't want a snooty waiter! I mean, its not like we are trying to swindle Disney, we just want to order less food at once.

I think we may just not get the plan. I calculated up a sample cost analysis and if I compare what we would probably order from restaurants where we would probably go to, it will cost about what we would pay on the DDP. Now, we would get more food on the DDP (desserts) but we wouldn't have gotten them originally.

Hmmm. Still on the fence. But I think I have given up the idea of even trying to share.

You could always just have one of your party order a house salad or small inexpensive app., and then share with them. They will not object if everyone orders something. Just and idea...

We often do this. We have never had problems sharing meals on the DDP. We've done it at LeCellier, San Angel Inn, Coral Reef, & Rose & Crown. We get extra drinks of course & sometimes an extra dessert.

I was also going to try to do some sharing this year. I was thinking of Sci Fi and Beaches and Cream...but have read on other posts that B&C will not allow it. I also would not try it at Tutto...our waiter was also kind of snooty when we were there too.

Is there another DDP URL that describes the no-sharing rule? I'm looking at the PDF and cannot find where it explicitly states that if i am on the DDP, i cannot share half of what i ordered for myself with another DDPer in my party (let's say DW). I can understand where that limitation applies for buffets or dinner shows, but if DW and I are at Teppan Edo, we should be able to order only one TS Entree and share that between ourselves, right? wrong? am i too dense? :confused3

i do see in page2 and in page6 (Q&A) where a DDPer can not redeem meals/snacks for a non-DDPer. This is not our situation though.

You may not use your KTTW card to redeem meals or snacks for Guests who are not on your DDP

Some of those restaurants being mentioned are non-Disney restaurants. They may have contracts with Disney that allow them to charge for every person at the table - hence the no-sharing stance. I know they do have other exceptions to the usual DDP practices at some of the non-Disney restaurants (like Tangierine Cafe - you don't get to choose the dessert with the DDP.)

Outside the "World", it's fairly common for upscale restaurants to charge a "plate" fee of $5 or even $10 for people not ordering entrees.

You should be OK at the buffets since they don't seem to make you stick to the kids items that are out for kids - basically the kids can eat whatever too at the buffets and some of the buffets have some really good stuff. My son doesn't like mac & cheese, or burgers, or (((GASP))) french fries (how I lucked out, I don't know)....so depending on the TS restaurant we ate at, he'd often get the kids meal and we'd "supplement" his meal with things from our meals -- no problems doing that at any restaurant...and I think that's because we were also getting the kids meal and having the credit taken off our total for that - it's not like we were trying to avoid using our credits.

At a couple of restaurants they did offer us the option to plate a smaller version of the adult meals when he said he didn't like pizza or mac & cheese....so we got that done twice which I thought was very accomodating - and think it was offered since it was him saying it, on his own, not a request coming from us.

There is no non-sharing rule that applies to every restaurant on WDW property. It is up to the individual restaurants whether they will allow sharing or not. Each restaurant may be different. The consensus is that most restaurants permit sharing and a few don't. Because it's up to the restaurant itself, though, each restaurant could conceivably change its current policy at any time. Therefore it is not an absolute given that any particular restaurant will allow sharing, whether or not it's been permitted in the past.

My thought would be to not even advertise that you are sharing a meal. What you plan to do with your food isn't really the servers concern, they are there to serve you, not critique your food choices. Order your four drinks and your three entrees. If it makes you feel better order the 4th diner a salad, cup of soup, side dish, or an appitizer that you can pay for out of pocket. My experience at the restaurants in Disney is that they are very busy and are not watching what everyone at each table is eating. We are constantly grabbing bites off of each others plates and passing things around because we want to try everything. Think of it as if one person in your group is not hungry, they wouldn't order a whole meal just because they thought they had to because your in a restaurant. I think its great that you are trying to be resourceful.

Unless I'm missing something, your plan wouldn't work anyway.

You have a family of 4 and would use 3 credits at each of 4 TS. That would leave you with 4 extra credits. But for 4 people to eat at Cindy's you need 8 credits (because its 2 credits per person at Cindy's.)

I was going to ask this same question (about sharing meals) my mom and I would like to try both 50s Diner and Sci-Fi but the fried chicken dinner at 50s diner is huge. Neither of us our big eaters so that would be great if we could share at these 2 restaurants. We have not been to either.

I think the OP just wanted to apply the extra credits to cindy's , and pay OOP at Crystal Palace. after all, I must know what I'm talking about (since I got it wrong the first time!:rotfl:)
honestly, you have to be a math major to figure out the possible permutations of dining credits used on the DDP. (but we never quit trying!!!)

I think we have discovered here: splitting CS credits is not a problem.
splitting TS credits CAN be a problem, although, unless it is a buffet, or all you can eat family style, I really don't see why. It's not like they will be bringing out any more food for the extra person. Maybe it has to do with people trying to share with friends who are not on the dining plan?
(like, "ok, we 2 will buy the plan, you 2, on a sep. room reservation, will not, and we'll split all the meals". ) I could see how that might be a problem.
people trying to "get around" the system, and still get to experience the dif. restaurants. (and then buy hot dogs, whatever, elsewhere,OOP, to fill the hunger "void".)
but I would think one family, 2 adults, 2 kids, with 3 meals,(on the same room World Key card) are obviously NOT trying this scam.
I guess all you could do is try it and see. unfortunately, since the DDP requires MONTHS of intense planning, "try it and see" wouldn't really work.
... sigh!
