Experience with Post Traumatic Stress?

Does anyone have experience with someone with post traumatic stress disorder? Any advice is more than welcome either in a post or PM if you feel it is too persional to share. In particular I would love any advice on living with someone with post traumetic stress, particularly in a family (DW, DH, kid(s)) situation.

Yes I suffer from it. Talk to your family doctor about recommending a psychiatrist that deals with this disorder and don't rule out medication.

I have two friends---a firefighter and naval officer---with PTS stemming from 9/11 and it is very dfficult. One actually had to spend time in a psychiatric hospital and the other refuses to get treatment. Both are publicly recognized as heroes and have received numerous commendations, but they are silently suffering within. It's a terrible situation.

I don't have much advice to offer other than to be available to the individuals in question. Learn what triggers flashbacks and stress. Be especially supportive on significant dates associated with their trauma. Be supportive of therapy and support groups.
