The million-dollar expansion of DC, set for completion by spring 2002, will include a new Ray Lagoon, doubling in size of the Aviary, and a Kid's Coral Reef. The improvements will increase the size of the 30-acre park by 15%, but capacity will remain at 1,000 per day. The 12,000-square-foot, salt water Ray Lagoon will be six feet deep and will house 100 southern and cownose stingrays. The Aviary will double the number of birds for 300 total, and will add a small-bird sanctuary where guests can touch birds. The park's existing Ray Lagoon will be turned into a children's reef with colorful fish and snorkeling. The expansion was designed by PGAV of St. Louis. The contract to build the expansion has not yet been awarded.
