Existing Reservation Question

I am a DVC member and have a reservation that I made in February through the Disboards for another family. She contacted me yesterday telling me they now have a family conflict and can no longer go.

The reservation they have is a good one. I tried to post it, but I guess you can no longer post existing reservations unless you are within the 30 day mark. This is probably to avoid people from profiting on coveted reservations, so I am all for that rule! Should I just cancel the reservation and then just try to rent the points for this family? These people have paid, so I do not gain or lose anything with whatever happens here. Just trying to help these people.

Anyone have any ideas or should I just try to rent the points and be done with this reservation. That will allow another DVC member to get the reservation they may be wait-listing, which is good for some DVC'r. The points are good until February 28th...

Thanks, ssnelle

Your options here on the DIS are to wait to post the existing reservation when you are within 30 days of arrival or offer to rent the points to someone else.

Good luck!

Thank you. I think the family that rented my points do not want to wait, so we probably will just cancel that reservation and try to rent the points. They rented these 95 points from me for $11 per point, and they would like to try to recoup that, but if they have to take a loss they will (I have nothing to gain or lose here as in my opinion, these are their rental points...just trying to help them so they don;t lose them altogether).

The details of your transaction have been removed so as not to suggest trying to rent other than on the Rent/Trade Board.

With a March Use Year, the points are somewhat distressed, but still could easily be rented to the right person by 2/28/11. As for waiting until within 30 days, in this economy that could be a challenge. I would discuss the issue with your renter and have them make the decision how they would like to proceed.

I think it's great that you are willing to be so helpful for your renters! :)

Good luck!

Sorry. I thought when I sent that to you, it was going to you, not being posted. I am not doing a good job of seeking information today. Sorry again.

My advice is to keep the existing reservation until 31 days prior to arrival date. You can still attempt to rent out the points, (but not a specific reservation) for a different time using our R/T Board now. If you find someone, then cancel the existing reservation and make the new one.

If you do not find someone, cancel the reservation at the 31 day mark so that the points do not go into holding. Then keep trying to find a renter. You can reduce the price if you do not get any bites.

Good luck - it's nice of you to try to help out that family.

Both of you need to understand that the other family cannot rent your points. They have no ability to make a reservation with your points, even if they are a DVC member.

If you are going to help them, you'll have to make the reservation yourself -- and you should be aware that you bear the risk of the rental even if they are the ones who receive the money from the second set of renters. They're your points, so if the final renter causes significant damage to the villa or leaves an unpaid bill...you're holding the bag.

The other option -- good today and tomorrow -- is to cancel the reservation and bank the points.

Yes, thank you. When I have not used my points, I have rented them out so I do know that only I have access to my membership. They are not trying to rent the points, I am trying to re-rent their points. They have paid me already; and anyone who rents my points goes through me.

You do sound experienced (as well as nice).

Just reminding you to keep your banking deadline in mind if the rented points are current use year points. If you can bank the points, you will have longer to try to find a renter.

But you probably have already considered this. Just in case, I'm posting the reminder. :)

Thank you Carol, I always appreciate the help of a moderator as you folks are the true experienced ones. I do not think these points can be banked as I had borrowed these to make this reservation initially for this family. So they will expire completely the end of February. They have paid me already, and now I am just trying hard to re-rent it for them. I have a few "bites" from another website, but boy, I sure wish I could post this here as this is where I feel so protected.

I understand the new rules and I do feel they are good rules as I never felt it was fair for some DVC'rs to grab the great reservations and then sell those for huge profit, as that was never the intent for DVC. However, those folks ruined it for the rest of us honest DVC'rs as I have never been in this position before: to have an existing reservation that I am trying to rent, and we are not profiting from it. My renter is willing to receive $2 less per point than she spent, and if I could advertise this, boy would someone be happy.

But I certainly understand that some renters were getting out of control so these measures did take care of that problem.

Thanks again for your help.
