EXILED FROM CHINATOWN: the girls take on the big apple! THE END!!! p.25

I'm loving this report Dawn! I always love your Disney resports but reading one from my hometown is even more fun :woohoo: Great pics of Battery Park! I don't think I've been down there since I went on a trip with school to the Statue of Liberty in junior high. We usually just drive down there on our way uptown when we drive in so I loved seeing all the pics!

If you ever make your way back to NYC, I can't recommend Google Maps enough. You put in your starting location and destination and pick the "Public Transportation" option, and it tells you exactly which trains to take to get to where you need to go, and where each train is located. I usually take one train line everywhere (and it's usually through Brooklyn and up to midtown or the Upper West Side), so whenever I need to go somewhere different I always use Google Maps. I've been in the city my whole life and I still don't know all the subway lines  Just a tip for next time!

Can't wait to see some of Brooklyn  I've actually never walked across the Brooklyn Bridge so I'm looking forward to the pictures!

i LOVE Century 21!!!!!!! Their shoe department is fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHEEEEEEE! another update..you are on a roll! Wall Street...i got sad looking at that picture because my friends live in one of the buildings in your picture i believe..i miss them!!
Isnt' that a crazy street!?
can't wait for the Chinatown update..i also hate it...wonder if our reasonings are the same ;)

Wow, Dawn! The Sept.11th stuff was so great. Thanks for sharing since I've never been there!

Boys, boys, boys...rubbing the bull's um "area"... I guess they never really grow up!

I want to see the Statue of Liberty so bad!

Hi Dawn,

I have read everyone of your trip reports and decided I should finally say hi!! I've enjoyed all of your trips, but this one really got to me. I lived in NY on Long Island for 39 of my 43 years (I'm now a somewhat neighbor of yours living in Suwanee GA). I never toured NYC like you did. I've been there, but always rushing around getting from one place to another. I have though been in the crown of the Statue of Liberty. Reading your report really makes me want to go back and visit again. I have shown my kids your pictures, although my 8 year old daughter was horrified by the naked cowboy/cowgirl!

Thanks so much for sharing all your trips with us. I feel like I know you, which is kind of strange!! So happy for your brother and his sweet little girl. Keep writing....I love it!

Laura

I love "The Sphere". That is too neat. Thanks for sharing your experience in NYC, it really is interesting.

Wow -9/11 I can still smell it when I think about it.It was a smell that you could never forget. My husbands two friends (brothers) jumped together off the towers and my cousin Glen is a fireman who worked it.He had years of therapy after.I saw the smoke for days.Im glad you did go to see it as anyone who gets to NY should its history and in memory of for those we lost.On lighter note...oh the subway ha ha..it takes some time to get used to it and Im glad you got to your destination.I cannot wait to hear your opinion of Chinatown :lmao:

Dawn,
I hope your call for assistance is not played on some radio show on bad 911 calls. Most subway systems are pretty easy to navigate. We didn't stray far from one or two lines. I think it would have been interesting and fun to cross the brooklyn bridge on foot. Such an interesting TR.
LOL, I was reading while eating my home made Ceasar Salad with chicken, your salads looked good. And I don't have a canolli for dessert, bummer. Maybe I'll have to get dessert at the Brewers/Cardinals game tonight.;)

I'm finally all caught up on your New York trip report!

The pictures of the WTC memorials are so moving. Thanks so much for posting those. It definitely brought back memories of that horrific day, but it's so comforting to know that so many people came together to help everyone out. I love that John Mayer song, too! I actually just YouTubed a video to listen to it after I saw that you posted about it. :)

Yikes! So sorry to hear about how confusing it was to find the right Subway train! I would've been frustrated myself!

Can't wait to read more!

So much history here, and with it came a lot of heartache. I can see how it would be hard for some people to visit.

But then you look out and see Lady Liberty still holding her torch high and proud, and it brings a sense of hope, fortitude, and peace.

At least it does to me.

Great update on a great trip! I'm so glad you got to do this, and I appreciate you sharing it with us.

Wow! Great updates! Very touching stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Can't wait to hear about Chinatown!

I am all caught up with your NYC trip report. I have been lurking, but have only really had time to read MeMom's report.

I worked in NYC for 11 years and you have done far more than me.. at one point I worked right in time square (next door to MTV).. what a pain in the butt that was.

I always loved Central Park.. I wish I knew about your trip.. I would have tried to come in to say hello.

I knwo I am a really big dork, but the building that ghostbusters was filmed in was 55 Central Park West. You probably passed it when you were there. The reason I know is b/c I actually go to see them rip up the streets when they were filming the movie. It was so cool.

The pictures of the WTC made me cry. I was workign on Madison Avenue at the time and lived in Hoboken (right across the river). The Sunday before, I was sitting at the park in Hoboken watching the regatta amazed at the beauty before me. Just two days later it was a mess of smoke and the city smelled like burnt wiring and rubbish for a long time. I don't ever want to forget that day.

Next time you venture up north I woudl love to meet you.

Another great update! The subway situation sounds frustrating though.

I can't believe you didn't find anything at Century 21! That is one of my favorite stores of all time. So much nice stuff. You just need to look and be patient to dig through everything. But it can be a madhouse. I used to work at NYU Downtown Hospital, which is a few blocks away from Century 21 and the South Street Seaport (not sure if you went there), and on lunch, everyone always went down to Century and came back with lots of bags.

And that other store you took a picture of, Daffy's, the one that says "Bargains for Millionaires" is another pretty decent store if you get lucky. I prefer Century, but Daffy's usually has some great deals as well, but I don't have as much luck there. They seem to be more hit or miss for me.

i just don't think i was in a shopping mood after the WTC site, ya know? i don't do well with crowds and it was CRAZY crowded that day.

Wow Dawn! Not a lot of words for that update, but I did shed some tears. Thank you for posting those pictures!

you're welcome! glad you enjoyed it. it's just something i thought i should share.

glad you enjoyed battery park! it was a really nice area. i would use google maps except i refuse to pay for a data plan to get the internet on my phone and i wasn't sure exactly where we'd be when we needed to get on the subway. i think they should have some sort of computerized system at the stops to help out the clueless like me! the brooklyn bridge is comin up!

i LOVE Century 21!!!!!!! Their shoe department is fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!

i didn't even look at the shoes. i just wasn't in much of a shopping mood that day.

:thumbsup2 and totally get why you "loathe" chinatown!! :rotfl:

you'll see very soon!

WHEEEEEEE! another update..you are on a roll! Wall Street...i got sad looking at that picture because my friends live in one of the buildings in your picture i believe..i miss them!!

that street is SO narrow! i'm hoping to get the chinatown update done soon.

you're welcome....just something i knew a lot of you would appreciate seeing. i got some great pictures of liberty later on that day - you'll see!

hi! thanks for saying hello and thanks so much for reading! cool that you live in suwanee! that's just like 25 miles from here. :thumbsup2 glad you're enjoying this TR.

I love "The Sphere". That is too neat. Thanks for sharing your experience in NYC, it really is interesting.

you're welcome! and yes, that sphere was really cool.

so sorry you knew some people who perished that day. so, so sad. yes, the subway is very confusing at times! chinatown is comin up!

you're welcome! that's what i thought, too, about the WTC site. such a horrific thing to remember but knowing how our country came together just made me smile inside. i have a DVD of him performing that song on "any given thursday". love it!

So much history here, and with it came a lot of heartache. I can see how it would be hard for some people to visit.

But then you look out and see Lady Liberty still holding her torch high and proud, and it brings a sense of hope, fortitude, and peace.

i agree, memom! that day we saw a lot of things that made me proud to live in this country. okay....chinatown was not one of them! but we took a cruise later that day that went so well with seeing the WTC site - i'm glad we did them on the same day. i hope you get to experience NYC some day too!

Wow! Great updates! Very touching stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Can't wait to hear about Chinatown!

thanks! chinatown is coming up soon.

oh, wow.....i wish we could've met too! about the ghostbusters building, i'm not sure where i saw it but i know it was on one of those tours! that may not have been the right building. sorry i made you cry but it was something i had to share. it was such an amazing experience.

Another great update! The subway situation sounds frustrating though.

thanks! yes, it was frustrating at times!

so after we FINALLY made our way on the subway over to brooklyn, we had to walk several blocks north to find the actual entrance to the bridge. sorry, melissa....i don't have any pictures of brooklyn itself! :guilty: i was so frustrated with the subway system by that point that i just wasn't thinking about taking any.

i've always been fascinated by the brooklyn bridge for some reason. i just think it's so pretty! i have a huge picture of it above my fireplace. so i definitely wanted to walk across it while i was in NYC. and my guide book gave me the great idea of riding the subway to brooklyn first and walking BACK towards manhattan to see the skyline on the way.

here we are....the entrance to the bridge....

DSC01899.jpg

the walking/biking part actually goes above the traffic, so you're not walking next to cars on the road which is nice. the bike area is to the right if you're walking towards manhattan and i was amazed at how many people would walk over there because those bikers would ZOOM by!!! :scared1:

i just love the architecture of this bridge! i will let the pictures do the talking....

i actually bought this print the first day we were there when we got that 5 prints for $20 and we all split it. i just think this bridge is so pretty! and i love how there are 2 lights where the twin towers were standing in this picture.

DSC02862.jpg

i also got these 3 post cards at a shop later that night and i think i'm gonna frame these too.

DSC02864.jpg

after the bridge we headed north towards chinatown. i had heard to head to canal street for some great shopping!

on the way we went through what i believe to be the judicial area of NYC. maybe this is the building i'd work in if i lived in manhattan!

DSC01935.jpg

anna taking a break from our long day of walking....

DSC01938.jpg

i thought this was a cool little firestation....

DSC01939.jpg

we found chinatown pretty quickly and it was just as i expected....a madhouse! it was SO crowded and SO chaotic. this is what it looked like everywhere we went....

DSC01943.jpg

there were also men with suitcases full of fake gucci, prada, louis vuitton, etc. purses for you to rummage through....

DSC01945.jpg

continued in next post: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=32667715&postcount=317

now let me preface this by saying that i'm not much of a purse girl. i prefer shopping for shoes! give me a black purse and a brown purse and i'm set. i'm also not good in situations with lots of people and chaos. i get irritable quickly in those types of situations.....probably why i don't go to disney in the summer time!

this is also probably why i was done with chinatown after about 15 minutes being there. D.O.N.E.!!!! i wanted to leave as soon as possible. all the shops were packed full of people and they were so narrow that you had to walk through them single file. and as you'd be walking down the sidewalk, people would lean in to you and whisper, "i got prada....you wanna see?" and hand me a polaroid picture of purses. um.....you think you i'm gonna go in a back alley with you?????? i don't think so!!!! the only thing i could find there was purses (all of which i thought were hideous), sunglasses (which i didn't need) and electronics (which i could give a flip about). so needless to say, i wasn't too impressed. what was funny is that they had fake labels that they could interchange on the purses according to what you wanted. :rotfl:

now if you're a purse girl, this place may be for you. it just wasn't for me. at all.

at one point we were coming out of a shop and this other girl was trying to get in. as i pointed out above, they were so narrow that you had to go in single file. so in order for her to get in, we had to get out first. well, my sister was ahead and me and anna was behind me. when brooke said, "excuse me" so that the girl would move in order for us to get out and her to get in, she just stood there. my sister is a solid girl....she played soccer her whole life and even through college. let's just say i wouldn't want to meet her in a back alley. so brooke decided to just keep walking since the girl wouldn't move and in the process she almost knocked the girl down. a man whom i believe to be this moron's father looks at my sister and says, "SLOBBO." what????? did you just say SLOBBO????? does anyone even know what that means?

so, being the overprotective big sister that i am, i turned around and said, "excuse me? do you understand the concept that if you want to get IN, we have to get OUT first????? GROW A BRAIN!!!!" see what i mean? i don't do well with chaos and crowds and STUPIDITY!

brooke did find these little donut things which were pretty good!

DSC01946.jpg

okay, so now comes the story which inspired the title to my TR. one of the last stores we went to was a purse store (surprise, surprise) where i actually found a purse i liked. only it was in black and i needed a brown purse. so i asked the little asian man that was working there if he had the purse in brown? he said yes and went to get it. in the meantime, anna found a white purse she liked and she thought maybe he'd give us a deal if we bought 2. i'm sure most of you know this but in chinatown, you NEVER pay the asking price. it's a bargaining game. i myself hate this. i prefer just going to target and buying whatever i need and not having to haggle. other people love this. so i let anna do the talking.

he comes back with the brown purse and i look at it and i like it. so i ask him how much. he says $30. well, of course you start low, so anna says, "if we buy both of them, will you give them to use for $35 total?" he yanks both the purses away from us and anna says (being totally ironic), "oh, are you gonna bag them up for us?"

then the guy starts yelling, "no....i tell you $30 for one and you say $35 for both. you get out my store. you leave now!!!!!!!"

i looked at him and said, "well, you don't have to get so upset about it." then anna said, "i hope you have a great, happy day, sir." and we left.

so from that point, i was REALLY done with chinatown! the first time i try to bargain and i get kicked out of a store. brilliant.

i will never, ever go back there. it was just dirty and crowded and BAD!

i did buy a couple of things there. i got myself a t-shirt, ray's nephew a t-shirt and margot a little "I <3 NYC" onesie. here's the t-shirt i got myself.....

DSC02877.jpg

we eventually made our way from chinatown to little italy, which i LOVED! i wish we would've spent more time here. by the time we got here there, it was like 5:00 and we had to be at pier 78 for our cruise at 6:00, so we kind of had to rush through.

DSC01948.jpg

walking through little italy, i felt like it was in the middle of a little street festival the whole time. all the restaurants had tables that came out onto the street and their matre de's were outside trying to get you to look at their menu. i just loved the festive feel of it!

DSC01950.jpg

DSC01951.jpg

brooke got some gelato.....

DSC01953.jpg

we needed to find a certain subway (again) so we began walking towards what we thought was the right area (again).....

DSC01957.jpg

it was about 5:45 and we needed to check in at the pier by 6:00 for our 6:30 cruise. knowing that once we got on the subway we'd have to change lines, i knew we wouldn't make it, so we opted to take our first NYC cab ride. we hailed a cab pretty quickly and off we went. we told him we had to be at pier 78 by 6:00 and he didn't waste ANY time getting us there.....as you can see from the pictures below.........

DSC01961.jpg

DSC01962.jpg

:lmao:

yes, we are goofy.

DSC01963.jpg

we tipped the guy pretty good because he got us there in plenty of time! :thumbsup2

next up....an AMAZING twilight (no, not the book, but the time of day) cruise around manhattan!!!!

This trip report is fabuous! I don't want it to ever end, but I can't wait until the next installment! I'm taking my first NYC trip next month and I'm so excited after reading your adventures. Your Chinatown story had me in tears of laughter. And now I MUST go to Little Italy. :thumbsup2

Loved this update! The Brooklyn bridge is sooo nice and I think its so cool you can walk over it although I never have, only driven. That's nice that they have the building locator thing still there with the twin towers on it but kind of eerie at the same time.

Chinatown is grosssss! I'm not a fan of it there either. I had a similar situation with a purse seller once in NYC. I saw a bag I liked (I'm a purse girl, still don't like Chinatown though LOL) so I asked the guy how much. He told me something like $75 so as I was about to put it down he's like "how much you want? how much you want?" I kept telling him my price would be wayyy too low and he kept insisting "how much you want? how much you want?" so finally I said 20 bucks. He snatched the purse out of my hand and started mumbling things and hiding the bag back in the big black garbage bag it came out of. I was like "see, i told you my price would be too low," and he just like waved me away. they're all nutso!

Little Italy on the other hand, I love too! The whole atmosphere is just like one big street festival, I love it especially at night. Another little anecdote here about city cab drivers. I once was in the city with 3 of my friends so we hail a cab and one friend had to sit in the front where she had a clear view of the driver driving with his left foot! They drive crazy enough as it is and this guy was driving with the wrong foot! :rotfl: Ok, so now that I've taken over your thread with stories about myself, I'll stop.

Of course all the pictures are great as usual and the cab ones really had me laughing out loud :thumbsup2

Ahh yes..Chinatown...my sister said she was ready to get out of there too! People kept trying to get their group to go to the back alley and look at purses with them too!
