Sorry, family & holidays. Starting already. But this time it's MY family for a change.

I'm cancelling holidays.....that's it.

Family can be difficult. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy the holidays without them. You don't need the hassles, just the enjoyment of the season.

Take a deep breath and count to 10. Though I do believe primal screaming is good for your soul too.

DH and I spent Christmas at Disney, just the two of us, last year. It was wonderful!

For us, it's better for the extended family to feel it is a PRIVELEGE rather than a RIGHT to spend the holidays together. Way, way too much drama otherwise. Besides, we want our own holiday traditions!

Families can be a pain, alright. Take a deep breath, have a and don't let them ruin your holidays. I have had to exclude certain people from my plans on occaision over the years, and while it may seem harsh or mean, the holidays went on much happier and smoother. I'm sure you will find a solution you can live with. I will send you some to help you out.

I hear ya! This year.....I just decided NO, I'm not doing it. I'm already a type A personality and this pregnancy will just make me tell all the idiots (not everyone but a select few fit in this category ) what I think of them.

I have much less stress knowing that it will just be me, the hubby and the kiddos this year!

I laid down the rules after DD was born. We would NOT travel on Christmas. They can sure come to us (as my parents are doing this year.) We get together with the IL's either before or after Christmas.

Thanksgiving has always been with the IL's. That is one holiday I like being around people. My parents have moved closer so we might have to start splitting. We'll see next year.

i've already cancelled my birthday(As no one really ever wants to celebrate it anyway, and everyone else is "too busy" on that day).

next year when i'm in my own place, i'll be cancelling the holidays as well. don't feel bad, you're not the only one.

We have FINALLY perfected our immediate family Christmas. We go to church at 3:00. Then we go order take-out Chinese. While that food is being prepared, we go to blockbuster to pick up about 5 or 6 movies. We go back to the Chinese place and pick up dinner.

We go home, eat, open the family presents, and start watching movies. DD, 12YO, will "get tired" early. She goes upstairs, in case Santa wants to get to our house early in the evening.

We sleep in until DD wakes up, last year it was about 8am, and then we opened Santa gifts.

DD and I stay in our jammies until mid-afternoon, and we watch movies, play with our gifts and have a fire in the fireplace.

We do see family around the holidays, the functions are stress-filled, as they were when we used to see everyone on the holidays. We just love our small family Christmas.

I'm with you....my mom and dh's mom started in (thru us, of course...they won't actually TALK to each other) tonight about WHO is going to get to come when, and in what room they are going to sleep!!! Seriously....these women are in their 60's...why do they do this???!!!!

It's all about who gets to spend the ACTUAL Thanksgiving Day with my dd....well, they say it is about that....it's actually just a power struggle between two women with too much time on their hands!!

I swear....I'm REALLY close to making them "duke it out" while I watch with a glass of wine with the dads...who think all this is as silly as we do!!!

I ALWAYS look forward to the holidays, and then family always manages to make it hateful!!

He-he! Younger DS asked which holiday I wanted this year: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve or Christmas. I said that I wanted them all! j/k - I said I'd like Chrtistmas Eve - that's when DH & I have always taken just our boys out to dinner. We've been doing this for many years, since they were little. Last year, their GFs joined us (they're both engaged now). Since his fiancee's father lives about 2 hours away, they'll go there for T'giving, have Christmas Eve with us and Christmas Day with her Mom, who is in the next town, so they'll be able to stop by here on Christmas Day for a short visit (when my sibs and their families are here.) I don't envy you folks who have so many places to visit! (Older DS's fiancee's parents live 1 1/2 miles away - how lucky is that!)

i never look forward to the holidays. the only one i do look forward to is Halloween(which JUST happens to be my favorite holiday) because my parents could care less if they saw me on that day.

somehow they tell me that i manage to ruin the holidays. how i ever manage this without even speaking i will never know. but like i said, once i move out i will be telling all family members i don't celebrate holidays anymore. and as of this coming year, i will no longer celebrate my birthday.

this was my past birthday.my sister made plans to do something on my birthday with her friends and none of her family wanted to come by themselves, my mother made plans to go to some church picnic instead, and then when we DID end up having something at the house, everyone was miserable that they had to be there and my mother fought with me until 2 days before about how she's not going to eat any of the cake because it's not the cake that SHE liked. needless to say, she won and got the cake she wanted because #1 she liked it and #2 it was cheap. oh and i didn't get any gifts or cards either.

Last year, I went away for the holidays. Could not handle it.

We've started having Christmas at home as a family. It just works out better that way. The day after, we visit my relatives, and we visit DH's for a day or two before we head home. DH did decide to have Thanksgiving at his family's this year without really asking me, so my one sis will be alone-- she can't travel that holiday because she'll be on call for work. We did have Easter with DH's family, so next Easter will be with mine. It is a juggling act, but at least they all get along with us, so they want us to visit.

Wow. Reading these has shown me how blessed DH and I are. Ever since we got married, both of our families have made it clear that they dont want us to feel pressured to spend certain holidays with either of them. We've worked out a pretty good system. With Thanksgiving, we go to his family's first (it is usually at his aunt's and she can't cook...), then we go to my family's for leftovers (at my Grannie's house and she's one of the best cooks I know!). For Christmas, we do dinner with his parents and grandmother a couple of nights before and exchange gifts. We spend Christmas day with my family at my grandparents' house with my parents, sister, aunts and uncles, cousins, etc...

It's worked out pretty good for us. We'll see how that holds up down the road when we have a baby.

Splash Mountain99...we finally broke down this year and are having Christmas at WDW. We could not take it any more either(for many reasons). I am only hoping that as time goes on things will get better...but somehow I doubt it.
