Exchange to Hawaii

I recently put in for an exchange with Marriott Maui Ocean club for the week of May 28 - June 3 of 2006. Yes, we are two years out. Howver, we have never done an exchange before. What are our chances of getting one? Are you allowed to give just the resort you want and be flexible with the week to get a better chance? We have been with DVC for two years and both years did the Eastern Carribean cruise. It will be hard to top that. Any advise on exchanges would be helpful.

You certainly are allowed to be flexible. You can give MS a range of dates, a list of resorts or destinations, or both. In fact, it's a good idea to do so to increase your chance of finding a trade. If you can offer this flexibility, call MS back and tell them. Two years, by the way, is pretty far out. Don't be discouraged if it takes a while.

About one or two months ago, I put in a request for January, February, and March of 2006. We picked 3 destinations (Maui, St. John and Curcacao). We haven't heard anything yet, but we are always hopeful.

I do believe MS said once you put in your request, you can't change it. Maybe I heard it wrong

Marriot owners can't deposit until 12 months out. If you want a studio or 1 BR, you have a mild chance of sucess. For a 2 BR as close to zero as you can get. Try for a direct exchange on the Rent/Trade Board or TUG. Even if you do match, it's likely to be about 2-4 months before the week.

I have had a standing request for Maui Marriott for any week in the summer June, July, August for any accomodation type. I started two years ago and have never heard back. I call each September and inquire again for the following year.

I have given up hope, but it may work for you. I think the best way to go is rent through TUG for the Marriott.

Thanks, for all the information. This might be a dumb question but what is TUG? I am just catching on to all the lingo. Also, just to play it safe do a lot of people go on the concierge Collection when trying to see a place that is on both the Concierge and world passport collection. Isn't that a sure thing if you book on the Concierge collection? And is that why it cost so many more points?

With the CC, you may book nightly stays with all the regular amenities offered for the room booked. So if you wanted a 3 night vacation with daily housekeeping, nightly turndown service and breakfast at a resort hotel or B&B which offers this on the CC, you could do it (at the higher points price). The hotel/B&B would be paid by DVC according to their contract with DVC.

With the WPC/II, you may only book full weeks as a timeshare exchange via II. There is usually no daily housekeeping nor other special included features. The timeshare week you'd receive would have been deposited with II by another timeshare owner at your destination resort. They will have paid for maint fees to their home resort as you will have paid your maint fees to DVC. Timeshares are managed without an owner or board seeking profits, like hotels or B&Bs. So your exchange is based on a trade model of "a week for a week."

Some resorts (like Atlantis, some Marriotts, some Four Seasons, Big Cedar, some DVCs, etc.) operate a portion of their property as a hotel with nightly stays and another portion of their property as a timeshare. So some of them will be available to you via both CC & WPC/II.

Lisa, I can't think of any properties available to DVC members through both II and CC at present AND into the future. Doral fit that bill but is off for 2005. Big Cedar is available through RCI but not II. And though it's conceivable, it's unlikely to ever be such. I'm sure part of the reason for dropping Doral was that it was on the II list. It also appears DVC has made a conscious decision to keep the CC at about the number of resorts currently available.
