New Disney Boss to Give Unit Heads More Control
Tue Apr 5, 2005 10:18 PM ET

By Sue Zeidler
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co. CEO-designate Robert Iger said on Tuesday he plans to delegate more power to top executives at Disney's various business units as one of his first major initiatives in running the company.

"We announced last week that we were changing direction in terms of strategic planning," Iger told reporters at the National Cable and Telecommunications Association convention in San Francisco. "We are empowering our business unit executives to create strategies for their own businesses and be accountable for the strategic direction of their units."

Iger was appointed chief executive last month and is set to start the job in the fall. As Disney's president and chief operating officer since 2000, he has been widely viewed as a loyal lieutenant to outgoing CEO Michael Eisner, and investors are anxious to see how he acts as the boss.

"I firmly believe the company needs to set goals and to create direction and accountability, but I believe it's incumbent upon the very talented and experienced people running our businesses to be the chief strategists for their individual businesses," he said.

"We're going to maintain a strategic process at the corporation itself, but this is more about empowering our businesses at a time when to compete effectively on the world stage, if you're a global media company, it's important to have nimble decision-making to create strategies that are part of the overall process of running a business," he said.

While Iger wants to give more power to the company's individual units, he said Disney had no plans to split up in a way that Viacom Inc. has said it was considering doing.

"We believe we've done a very effective job at managing our businesses in a very integrated fashion on a lot of levels, so we have no intention in splitting the company in a manner that would be similar to what they have done," Iger said.

"But we're always looking at our asset base," he said. "I don't rule out the possibility of divesting assets, but we don't have any plans nor do we think it makes any sense to split our company in two."

Iger reiterated he wants to reopen talks with Pixar Animation Studios Inc., which last year broke off talks to extend a distribution deal with Disney beyond 2005.

"I did say I'd like to and I hope we have an opportunity (to talk), but I don't want to say anything beyond that right now," he said.

A chill between the companies is widely attributed to stormy relations between Pixar Chief Executive Steve Jobs and Eisner. Jobs has signaled that he was waiting for a change at the top of Disney before negotiating in earnest a distribution deal for his 2007 film, but he also said he was unlikely to extend the relationship with Disney.

Iger's promotion opens up the No. 2 slot at Disney, and he said on Tuesday he might consider hiring someone in a chief operating officer-style role.

"I don't rule that out," he said. "I'm going to spend time during this transition process determining in consultation with the board what the most effective structure of the company would be. I had a good partnership with Michael as CEO and COO. I don't rule out the possibility of naming a COO, but this is part of process and part of the transition and the dialog I'll have with the board."

So long as this is the steak, and not just the sizzle, I don't think anything better could be pursued.

Ok, so now I believe the Enquirer article citing that Ei$ner has in fact been abducted by aliens - that's the only way I could imagine he'd let this happen!

Thoughts/reactions?

So far I'm enjoying my position of " Giving Iger the benifit of the doubt" and taking the "Wait and see" attitude.

This works out great for Iger. No accountability. As long as he didn't recommend or appoint any of the business heads, he's golden.

I pray that Iger does not decide, as the new kid in charge, to keep Ei$ner on board after September as some kind of paid "advisor." That would sort of answer the question as to whose back pocket he is in.

Like the disbanding of the strategic planning group, its the right thing to do organizationally, especially given Iger's lack of expertise in some areas of the company. (That's not a knock... just about anyone would have limited experience in some parts of a company like Disney)

If nothing else, he's saying he's going to do things that we wished Eisner would have done. The meat of the matter, though, is no closer to being resolved. Is the delegation actually going to happen, or is this lip service? Will they have REAL strategic authority in their businesses? Will Iger stick to that plan when the inevitable failures occur? Are the right people in those positions that will get increased responsibility? If not, will Iger find the right people?

Also, part of Disney's problems have stemmed from its allocation of resources across businesses. That type of strategic planning will not be addressed by the individual business heads. They'll make their cases on what resources they need, but the decisions still have to come from corporate.

There's plenty more questions where those came from. The point being that yes, what has been announced is a positive, but its just a drop in the bucket. And yes, a drop is better than nothing, and it has to start somewhere, etc, etc, etc.

Matt,

It's over.

Now tap your heels three times and repeat after me,

"There's no place like home."
"There's no place like home."
"There's no place like home."

Of course its over. We just don't know what the end result will be.

And if you don't mind, please stop picturing me in a dress and red heels.

Its making me uncomfortable.

This struck me a little funny though:
"But we're always looking at our asset base," he said. "I don't rule out the possibility of divesting assets, but we don't have any plans nor do we think it makes any sense to split our company in two."
What ASSETS could they be LOOKING at divesting?

Perhaps, just perhaps, Iger is a smart cookie. He played the part of Eisner's brown noser long enough to get the job, and now he wants to make his mark on the company? :confused3

And now that he has the job, he is going to correct all the things that he sees wrong, which he couldn't do as Eisner's #2, because to point out the problem would have caused him to become an enemy??

Sometimes, you just got to play the game to get what you want.

They were purchased separately.

But you can sell anything as its own entity, if somebody is willing to buy it. For example, they could sell Disneyland as its own entity, or ESPN, etc, etc, etc. (No, haven't heard anything... just examples)

Don't like red ?
Not my color.

Yep, I understand that. My question was whether they were already two different business entities.

"Lighten up, Francis!"

(couldn't resist!)

randytenn - I think you may be on to something.

Indeed randytenn, crusader, etal

The possibility that there is more to Mr. Iger than was shown while he toiled under The Big ME is the hope of all Disney fans. So far, at least, he has made positive steps IMHO.

I have no choice but to wait. see, Hope and Pray...

I had a disturbing meeting with an Ex CM today; she was a big fan of ME, and she thought very little of the higher ups that I know and like...

I said look, ME did a great job in the early years, but when Frank Wells left us, Eisner does not have the creative side to run a company that is MORE EMOTION than Stock Price...I was more shaken than she was...
