Has anyone ever requested an exception to the one-year borrowing limitation? We would like to go on the DCL Med cruise next summer but need to tap into the year-after-next Use Year to minimize the cash requirement. Those point are already shown on the DVC website as being available "for a Disney Cruise Line® vacation that will take place in the previous Use Year." This trip would occur within six weeks of when we would be able to access those points based on what this statement indicates.

Member Services has said they can't grant that type exception, so I'd like to know if anyone here has ever made such request, how you went about it and what DVC's response was.

Thanks for any insight.

I've never heard of that type of request being granted.

The only exception I'm aware of is a recent change allowing us to borrow from an additional Use Year for a cruise 2 years ahead.

In the past, we could only reserve DCL 11 months in advance which restricted DVC members from a better cabin selection. This was changed so that DVC members can now reserve cruises as far ahead as anyone else. If you have a February Use Year and want a cruise in March 2008, we can now reserve that by borrowing from the 2009 Use Year - but still not from the 2010 Use Year.

It can never hurt to ask DVC for an additional year to borrow for the cruise. Just remember that the points can't be returned to their original Use Year and will become "Reservation Points" - meaning they could not be used a DVC resorts - if you later need to cancel the reservation.

Good luck!

The most one could use would be 3 years worth of points. None of the changes have altered that at all. The rule has always been you pay for the points in the use year where you use the exchange item. For things that happen so far out that you may be 2 use years ahead such as a DCL cruise or an exchange that is that for out, DVC's rules are that you can pay in either this use year or the next. I can see them being somewhat flexible for one who didn't have enough points for this use year or who had points they needed to use up but I'm certain any flexibility would be within the guidelines I listed above.

Here's an example. Assume one has a Feb Use year and reserves DCL for June, 2008. Since one could not access the 2008 use year you could pay in either the 2006 or 2007 use year. Assuming you banked 2006 points to 2007 and then borrowed 2008 pts into 2007, that would give a max of 3 years pts. Or if one had banked points they needed to use they could combine them with current use years points and borrow from 2007 pts. But in no case would one be able to bank 2007 to 2008 then borrow 2009 points this far out. Come 1 Feb, that would change assuming a Feb use year. And in no case would one be able to get more than 3 years worth of points directly. But there's always the chance to transfer points, the 3 year rules doesn't affect that so any transferred points would be above and beyond the 3 year rule mentioned above.
