I've been searching tuxedo vendors because I've seen some inexpensive tuxedo packages for just a little over the rental price, but they've all been 100% polyester (mmm sweaty!), whereas the rentals are usually 100% wool.
I ultimately put together in bits and pieces with eBay auctions a 100% wool tuxedo (jacket, pants, shirt, vest, tie, shoes) for $108.25 total, but it took a lot of work and a lot of luck (my best score was a near-new tuxedo jacket in my size for $24 including shipping).
But I just found a site that's having a special on a 100% wool tuxedo package (jacket, pants, shirt, cummerbund, bowtie, cufflinks, studs, free garment bag) for just a little more than the polyester packages out there. The site is:
http://www.tuxedodirect.com/
Figure I'd pass it along to anyone who might want to buy a tux. $150 is less than twice the $85 rental fee from Cruiseline Formalwear. It doesn't include shoes, but then neither does the rental fee.
[Edit: I'm not affiliated with this company and I've never used them, so I don't know how reputable they are. They just had the best prices for a 100% wool tuxedo package. Another decently priced merchant with a larger variety is http://www.uniformalwearhouse.com/.]
