I caught our poodle trying to munch on a piece of cat litter (we use the clumping litter). I hope it was the only piece he managed to get. Of course I took it off of him right away.
I thought he had learned his lesson several years ago. We weren't aware at the time that cat litter appealed to dogs because, when cats eat, not everything is digested and it comes out in their bm's. He must have eaten a bunch, because he got the worst diarrhea. Poor little guy was up every 1-2 hours at night 'cause he had to go to the bathroom. I finally just put doggie pads all over our room and let him sleep with us. When he had to go, I didn't have to get up and let him out. I had just returned to work from 4 weeks off for elbow surgery, and I needed to SLEEP!
I did have a sample tested to make sure he wasn't sick b/c of worms or something else. But the vet tech took one look at it and said "yup, cat litter all right!", but still tested it just in case.
After that incident, we moved the litter to a spot where he would have trouble reaching it. Couldn't put it too high up, because our cats are getting old and would have trouble reaching it themselves.
How he got this piece I have no idea. I suspect our g. doodle may have had something to do with it.
Please, if you have both dogs and cats, do NOT let the dog eat cat litter. We were lucky that this "passed" without any problems, but there have been cases where the litter got stuck in a dog's digestive track and the dog died.
