Mission: Space gets airsick bags

Disney says its $100 million rocket-ship ride may be missing something: space-sickness bags. Mission: Space, which opened at Epcot this summer, has become one of the most popular rides at any of Walt Disney World's four parks.

Signs warn people prone to motion sickness not to climb aboard. But with its spinning space capsules - meant to give guests the feeling they're blasting off on a mission to Mars - the ride leaves some would-be astronauts feeling ill.

So earlier this month, park workers began putting motion-sickness bags in some capsules as a test. It will be several weeks before Disney decides whether to make the bags standard equipment on the ride. The bags are plain - no logo for Disney World or the ride's sponsor, Hewlett-Packard - and will be put in different places inside the capsule during the test period.

"Very few people ever need those motion-sickness bags, but it's very nice to know those things are there," spokeswoman Rena Langley said.

Disney also may have a practical reason for offering guests motion-sickness bags: keeping Epcot's signature ride up and running.

When it's their turn to ride, guests are directed to one of four bays, each with 10 ride capsules attached to a centrifuge.

If a passenger becomes sick in one capsule, the entire bay must be closed until workers can clean up.

It will be several weeks before Disney decides whether to make the bags standard equipment on the ride, Langley said.

One industry expert said the ride's popularity would surely grow as word spreads that it's the first ride in Disney history with motion-sickness bags.

"The people who really love rides, who think Disney is a little short on thrills, are going to see that and say, 'I'd better get down there and ride that puppy," said Tim O'Brien, a senior editor at the trade publication Amusement Business.

My daughter has never been sick on a ride and she was almost one of those who got sick when we were there a few weeks ago.

I did not ride it but she will never ride that again. I guess when she landed on Mars she was afraid that shed have to come back to earth. She's the one that was banging on the door, let me out, I'm gonna puke............

Ahhhhhhhh, her mother's daughter!

Uh-oh! In about a week my family and I are going to be goin to Disney for one day, mainly to try out Mission: Space. I get motion sickness on rides that have large drops, but I love Rockin' Roller Coaster, Space Mt., and Thunder Mt. I refuse to even go near Splash Mt. and Tower of Terror. I've been on those rides where you are spun around veyr quickly that so that you appear to "stick" to the walls, and didn't get sick. Im beginning to wonder if this ride is really for me...by the sounds of it, I'm not so sure. My dad just told me I'm a wimp! Any suggestions?

my daughter does all these rides including the Hulk at IOA and will never do space again.

good luck!

I know I've said this more than once, but really this ride didn't cause any trouble for me at all. The pressure hurt my ears a little (I was very congested) but I looked to the right even during the ride and I was okay (no point in looking left since that was the door). I guess I was expecting more than I got... it was a cool ride, but more rides are more "thrilling" to me... this felt almost like nothing. I wonder why this bothers some but not others so much.

I am an uber-ride chicken and I LOVED Mission Space! I left with a feeling of elation, not sickness. Follow the directions and you will probably be fine, but we all took Bonine as a precaution. My brother and DH can't do most simulators, but they were very mildly affected by Mission Space and both would ride again.

Test Track left me dizzy and weak in the knees!

Like Helenabear, I didn't think there was a whole lot to be sick about on MS. The first few seconds of the "blast off" really sucked me into my seat and knocked my breath out a bit, but as for nausea, nothing.

This ride gives you TONS of motion sickness warnings before you board, so rather than need the bag, people prone to motion sickness shouldn't ride.

Like you I don't ride Splash Mt. and Tower of Terror, I don't like the drops. But I did ride Mission Space last November and loved it
When you ride if you will sit in one of the two middle seats you'll be fine, my sister sat next to one of the doors and started to feel sick until she held her hand up to block her peripheral vision she said it was just to much for her, afterwards I started asking the people that had became ill, where they had sat everyone said, "Next to the door"....So maybe that will Help You.
