Everything you need to know about WDW Christmas- Tips & Secrets

I'm planning a trip for my family as a Christmas gift in 2011. This will be our first trip to WDW. Any tips, suggestions, opinions, etc. will be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Will you be at WDW Christmas week? If so, please be prepared for VERY large crowds which may not leave a positive image of WDW. We went last year, arriving Christmas afternoon, staying through the 2nd, and the crowds were literally shoulder to shoulder at times. We had been to Disney many times before and wanted to experience it at Christmas, but I think if that had been our first trip, it might have not been the best experience.

If you are there even a week or so leading up the Christmas, it's my understanding that the crowds are much more manageable and you'll be fine. I would just hate for you to be disappointed if you are not able to do all you plan on doing.

It does help to stay on property and use FP, extra magic hours, etc. We used all those which meant some mornings actually being at the bus stop at 6:30, but it was worth it.

WalkonPooh, you gonna have a certain character in your window? I have Goofy on skis in mine.

I'm sure others will chime in with where you can order one to be delivered to your room. There is a florist that will do this I believe. But it is very expensive.

I bought a small table top tree last year after Christmas. I'm going to mail it to my room before the trip so we can put it up when we arrive. It cost next to nothing, so I'll probably gift it to another guest when we leave.

I am considering ordering a small tree from Amazon and having it shipped to the hotel if Disney Florist is too high (they don't have Christmas up yet). DD and I will make some homemade Disney decorations before we go.

You just must take decorations for you window in your room. I was there last year and took an extention cord ( no outlet under our window), lighted window hanging Mickey I bought at Walgreens (passed it on to someone checking in when I was leaving). Some other do dads to hang in window. They do not want you to use tape, so I got some window clings. Got a cheap timer to turn the lighted Mikey on before we got back to room after dark. Also used some of those "Command" brand hangers that don't leave a mess when you take things down before you leave.:santa:pixiedust::tinker:

Thought I would share our pic from last Christmas at CBR! We plan to do the same this year!

How late into January are the decorations still up from Christmas? I doubt they will still be up when we go the 2nd week but it would be nice! My husband & I have never been there to see the parks dressed up for Christmas!

by the third of January I noticed everything holiday was down. Sorry

It really is a beautiful time to be there. Is this your first trip?

Well, yes and no. It is our first trip for an extended time alone (Just me and my 2 daughters). We went for a week last year but my dad went with us. Prior to that we had only been for a day trip. This is however our first Christmas trip and I am so excited. I can't wait to see all the decorations and the lights and just experience the atmosphere, crowded as it may be!!! :)

Although we have been many times this will be our first Christmas trip and I too am so excited. However I am waiting for the CP dates for 11/28-12/7 to be announced and so far they aren't. Does anyone know when Disney will have all the dates filled in. Thanks so much.

Great thread! I have been to disney in 2006 for 9 days Dec. 8-16 and to mvmcp twice! I love going in early/mid Dec.
Here are my recommendations/tips:

MK:
-See the Castle lights show. It has Cinderella and the fairygodmother. It's short and cute and the lights are unforgettable.
-Decorations and snowfall on mainstreet (so pretty at night)
Tip: Around Dec. 22nd, the stuff shown at Mvmcp is usually shown in MK during regular days with a regular park ticket!

Epcot:
-Tree lighting with characters (usually at 6pm between FW and WS).
-Candelight processional (narrarators and dates announced for 2010). Tip: Small kids (and some husbands) find this boring.
-Storytellers in each country only at Christmas. Some stories are really worth listening to.
-Illuminations holiday ending
-You can meet Santa and Mrs. Clause in America several times each day! Check the times guide.

DHS:
-Decorations
-Sometimes there is a special choir/show by the Beauty and the beast theater. (Not sure if they are returning this year).
-Osborne lights (Tip: you can see these even after Fantasmic when the park is "closed"). You may want to see these when turned on though. It's pretty cool.

AK:
-Camp Minnie Mickey has decorated trees and Santa Goofy
Characters are in their holiday outfits.
-Jingle Jungle parade
-Carolers strolling around are a nice touch.

DTD:
-Festival of the seasons (decorations and meet Santa in the marketplace).

Resorts:
-Fort Wilderness has holiday sleigh rides
-Also in FW, many campers put up xmas lights and decorations. (Although you shouldn't go out of your way to see these, if you have time and don't have anything else to do or if you are already in the area, you may want to check it out)
-Grand Floridian has gingerbread house
All resorts decorated and have Christmas trees! (The WL is gorgeous at Xmas)

Tours:
-There is a Christmas tour called the Yueltide tour. It shows you some backstage magic of Christmas at Disney. Tip: I think its only 16 and older.

Mvmcp:
Tip: Go to mvmcp on a weekday and the earlier date you choose, the better. Some parties also sell out in advance, so get your tickets early. You can buy online or over the phone and have them mailed to you before your trip.
-See the first show in tomorrowland and get there early. You may not be able to see the later shows. This happened to us. We missed it because they were all full well ahead of the scheduled time.
-The parade is unbelievable. Its my fav. parade all year and its not to be missed in my opinion. Tip: There are 2 showings of the parade. The later one is much less crowded than the first, but they are both pretty bad and you must line up early either way.
-You can also see Holiday Wishes, get cookies/cocoa for free, meet characters, watch snowfall, and see the caslte lit up in gorgeous lights.

I cannot wait to do this all again next year!

is there anyway you can arrange for a tree, faux, or real in your room?

When I investigated this last year, the Disney Florist wanted $300-$400 for a small decorated tree. :scared1:

I thought about shipping one to WDW from an independent service but couldn't get the total below $100, so we skipped it. If you already have a small artificial one you could ship down, that sounds like a good idea.

ALSO the DIS sometimes has a thread about a tree swap, where departing DISer pass a tree to arriving DISers.

We spent Christmas in Vegas one year (we live in Orlando so we spend Christmas near Disney almost every year!). While we were out of town, we went to a Walgreens there in Vegas and bought a little fiber optic tree for around $15-20.00. You'd need a car, though, to do something like that -- or have to take a cab. We boxed up the tree and left it behind in the room when we flew home.

I just bought a 2 foot tree from Michael's (I don't think it cost more than $5) and a string of 35 lights, which is plenty for that small a tree.

While I understand wanting to choose who'll you see, I would suggest booking as soon as you can. It's entirely possible that they might not have the narrators pinned down for those dates by the 26th, and sometimes the narrators' dates get changed (I've experienced both situations), and you want to make sure you get the date, time and restaurant you want.

Okay, you all have talked me into it. I am adding a Christmas Tree to my packing list for December and then I can hand it off to someone coming in nearer the holiday.

As I am getting rid of nearly 35 years of decorations it should be well fitted out too. :cheer2:

We plan to pick up a few ornaments in the parks and add them to the tree at night. The ornaments will be coming home with us, the tree probably not.
