Everything you need to know about WDW Christmas- Tips & Secrets

We have been there for the past two Christmas'. First time was Dec 24th to Dec 31, 2007 and then Dec 26th to Jan 4, 2009. We found the crowds managable. In 2007 MK & Epcot both closed on Christmas day, but I knew this may happen ahead of time with Tour Guide Mike and we went to DHS, we had a wonderful day there and did not find it overly crowded. We are hoping to go back again this year for Christmas, but for three weeks so we can enjoy the Christmas celebrations and decorations and a little bit of down time when everyone goes home after New Years.
Both years we wore shorts the entire time day and night. We only needed a sweat shirt one day, due to the wind. :santa:

We used TGM for our June trip two years ago and loved it. Is there advice very specific to christmas time that we'll need or do you think its safe to just apply what we learned for our June trip? We're going the week before christmas.

I have been early Dec twice...this next time will be our 3rd Dec trip. I did join the TGM just to get a different perspective on it. I am happy with it!! I have read a few things that really made a lot of sense!!! I am waiting his update for our time once the park times are released.I would recommend joining it-if you can--just for some great pointers!! We spend so much on our Disney trips, that it doesn't bother me to spend $20 to ensure I will have an even better time!!!

Especially if this is your first Christmas at WDW:
1. Be at front gate of MK 15-30 minutes before posted opening time (even if you are not staying onsite....) Mickey & gang come by on the train and wish everyone a Merry Christmas
2. Candlelight Processional - like someone said earlier, get there 30 mins or more ahead of time. The music is glorious. We have heard Neil Patrick Harris, Phylicia Rashad, Gary Sinese, and Courtney B Vance/Angela Basset as the readers - all were fantastic!!! Even if you don't get in, you can hear from nearby. "Guest" choirs have procession from somewhere behind American pavilion.
3. enjoy the decorations! Everywhere!

Hi! We are thinking about trying Tour Guide Mike also!:rotfl: Just wondering how much specific Holiday info we will get though?? Also wondering which restaurants are best for decor, ambience, etc for the Holidays?? And, does anyone know if any of the characters at the Character meals dress up for the Holidays?:santa:

Giving this question a bump because I was wondering the same thing.:santa:

It does seem extra magical at DW during xmas. Our family has done many xmas at WDW and here are some of the things we have found.

1. Dont miss CP, The dinner pkg is definitely worth the extra $$. Reserved seating is a great benefit. If not plan to be in line 2hours before the show.

2. Holidays around the world. This is a great way to experience how xmas is celebrated in other countries. The storytellers are wonderful take some time to enjoy them. Personally I could stand and watch the Lights of Winter all evening. This is the light covered bridge to WS that is synchronized with xmas music.

3. At 5pm everyday at the MK go to town square. You will see the lowering of the US flag with the assistance of a visiting vet. Then immediately following this ceromony they have a cute show to light the Main St. xmas tree.

4. Yultide Tour This is so much fun. You visit several parks and a resort and discuss holiday traditions and how they decorate the parks and resorts. You also get a backstage tour of the xmas warehouse. Guest always leave with a little present.

5. Visit the resorts. All the resorts decorate in line with their theming. My faves are the GF & FW. At GF, 5pm the cms come out to the lobby and sing xmas carols while passing out cookies. The Gingerbread house store offers more delicious treats and the gingerbread carosel is breathtaking. Sit in the lobby with roasted chestnuts and a beverage and enjoy the xmas music by the band and pianist.

FW is never to be missed especially the closer you get to Dec 25th. The guest here go all out decorating their campsites and golf carts. You will see anomatronic characters and music. Take the hayride in the evening they depart from PH. We walk it or ride on bikes or golf carts. The campfire and movie is another option.

WL gets honorable mention. The lobby tree and hidden mickey tour are great.

6. Xmas fireworks. Three of the parks have special holiday fireworks.

7. If you are going to be there the week between xmas and NYe be prepared for crowds. This is the busiest week at WDW. Get dining resvs early. Realize you will not get as much done as you would normally. Parks tend to fill to capacity by 11am. On xmas day we avoid the parks try Disneyquest, a movie or the resorts. During this week be extra courteous to the CMs for some reason this is also a stressful week for them. I wont go into some of the terrible and rude behavior I have seen by guest specifically on xmas day. Remember they are giving up the holiday and time with their family.

8. Osbourne lights, a not to be missed stroll through a Fla snowfall and beautiful display. Not as good as when they were on the backlot house street but still good. Plus you can get a mug of hot cocoa.

9. We always have a tree in our room and bring the german pickle. Whoever finds it gets a Disney gift card.

10. On xmas eve Santa manages to visit the resorts for some time with everyone. Usually he is in the lobby. If you are at FW he is at PH. Photographers tend to be nearby for family shots. So put on your xmas best and get everybody there for a family photo.

Personally we did not feel MVMCP was worth the extra cost. The extra includes pretty much the same parade they do during the day, a xmas stage show, cocoa & cookies.

Weather - It varies. Over the years we have experienced beautiful 70s, Rainy xmas day and temps in the teens and 20s so watch the weather channel and be prepared for anything.

Hope everyone has a magical time.

I posted this on the thread about MVMCP and didn't exactly get the response I thought I would. Actually I didn't get an response at all to it. :confused3 I thought it was somewhat a good idea, but please someone let me know if it's lame or just a bad idea. I promise I won't be insulted, sometimes my brain works in weird ways :upsidedow Okay so here's the idea:

I've noticed a lot of people said that it does get chilly at night and some have mentioned a blanket to sit on for the parade because the ground is cold. DH and I travel light when we go (the necessities and a few snacks in a backpack and that's it).

So I was thinking of how I could get the same luxury of sitting on a blanket but not creat more bulk to carry and  Hey why don't you just go to the fabric store and get some fleecy fabric and make mini "butt" blankets. You can make them as simple or fancy as you want (ie - just a single piece cut in a 16 x 16 square OR two pieces sewn together really quick on the sewing machine)

I just thought this was a good way to keep the tushies warm but not having to lug around a blanket.

I hope someone can benefit from this, I know DH and I will have our mini blankets so we can keep our buns toasty  <--(i just like the banana)

I've enjoyed reading about Christmas at the World!

We are going Nov 7 - 14 this year, and although we will get to attend MVMCP, how much of the other decorations will be up that early?

thanks!

Does the parade that they put on during the day happen all December? I thought the Christmas parade only happened during MVMCP up until the week before Christmas? We are planning on going the week before Christmas anyway so weren't planning to do MVMCP - however depending on when my BIL can take his vacation (his vacation is determined based on seniority so he may not be able to get the week he wants off if 2 other people higher up than him have requested it), we may have to go earlier in December. I had been thinking if we go earlier we would have to do MVMCP to see the parade? Is this not true?

Thanks,

I think that's a great idea!! I will be 'stealing' it! :thumbsup2

LOL I'm glad that someone found it helpful. I was just thinking "Gee I hope no one thinks I'm looking for praise on such a little thing" but I have had the unpleasant experience of sitting on a cold ground in December, and I'm a big baby, but I could just imagine how uncomfortable it is for the little ones.

Totally excited for our Xmas trip, first time to WDW during the Holiday season. Has anyone done the Yuletide tour? Feelings? Also DH and I were toying with the idea of doing ICE at Gaylord Palms. Has anyone been and is it worth it? We will not be renting a car this time so what is the cab ride like?

Happy Disney Holiday Planning everyone!!! :santa:

Good call. We did go to a few, but it’s easy to forget about this.

Definitely visit the resorts! Yes!

Good tip on the 5pm at the GF!!! I didn’t know that at all. Will definitely keep it in mind as our trip is the week before Thanksgiving.
Anymore specifics like this, regarding time/place?

Thanks!

Grumpy92- I have asked this question several times and have gotten different responses. I know some people do not notice the smell of cinnamon but, I am allergic to cinnamon. I get a migraine. Do you recall anywhere besides the resorts with the gingerbread houses that you noticed the smell of cinnamon?

I am excited to be going (on my birthday to boot!!!).

We will be there the 12-19....I am expecting crowds (we went two years ago, and it wasn't too bad at the end of Sept.).

We also got the Merry Christmas party...I figure less lines for Magic Kingdom.

I can't wait to celebrate my bday there!!:cheer2:

We were there in Dec of 08 and we got a taxi to go see Celebration...it wasn't bad at all! Pretty quick!

I don't know if you read my responses earlier about this, but I get migraines from smells also. Poor us, right?! Well, I don't get one from cinnamon, usually...but too much or the synthetic smell used in floral stuff is KILLER!!!! Any way, I have never noticed it to be overwhelming...maybe just ease into the resort and see how you do...don't just rush up to the gingerbread houses...that way if you start to notice the smell is bothering you, you can get away from it before you are totally overwhelmed with it!

Thanks,

The Christmas Parade is run during the day starting December 19th (Saturday). Before that date, the only way to see it is during the Christmas party. I can't seriously believe it is worth $55 a person to see this parade. (If that is the only reason your getting MVMCP tickets.) Of course, I find regular parades a giant bore. (Spectromagic is a whole other story.)
