Everything Michigan....

Battle Creek is a mixed feeling for me. When I was in Girl Scouts, our troop went up to Kellogg's, which was so cool. Then we went to this little museum kind of place, where they had babies in jars at different stages of developement..from a tiny little sac, all the way up to a full term still born. I still shudder from that memory..

Kelloggs doesnt have tours any more........:sad2: At the end of the tour they gave you a bowl of ice cream with cereal sprinkled on it!!!!

You went to Kingman Museum.....its still there......everyone remembers the babies....:sad2: :sad2: All the elementary schools in the area still go there (5th grade I think). The place looks like the Haunted Mansion at MK (sort of).
It is located in a very large park with big hills for sledding.....We used to go there with the kids.

You need to go to Binder Park Zoo....it is a great zoo to spend the day at...
(exit 100 on I94). Last time at Animal Kingdom we watched the show "birds of flight" and we spoke to one of the handlers there......she worked at Binder for 2 years......

Colors werent totally changed but it was still awesome up north......It did rain off and on.

Thanks for the pictures. :thumbsup2 I used to live in Oscoda, I moved back down to the Detroit area in 1999. I do miss the colors up there.

Random Michigan thought:
In 1993 when I lived in Oscoda there was a freak snowstorm on September 30th. I actually went snowmobiling in September! :rotfl: Of course the snow melted the next day but it's still a fun story to tell.

Thanks for the pics UJ! ALthough there is alot to complain about, we do live in a beautiful state!

Back to the complaining - this weather stinks! We went to turn our heat on yesterday and the furnace won't kick on. Only 8 years old, have no idea what the prob is?!

UJ - Nice job to be hanging out at Cabelas! We are about 30-40 min from there. You were closer to me when you were at the airport!!!!

Did anyone else go to this years Ren Fest in Holly?

Yep. Went with some friends visiting from Wisconsin. It was the day we were eventually hit by hurricane Ike and it poured like the Dickens. We still had a good time. DH whupped the performers in "bunny fencing".

I did have to do a little tooling around Holly, but no more than I do on my average daily trip to work.

That's a neat area! A friend of mine owns a cottage up there on Van Etten Lake, and she invites me up there sometimes. Things have sure changed up there since the air base closed and the military cleared out. Not bad or anything, just different. :) I love poking around in the small towns up there, being so close to Lake Huron, and generally enjoying the outdoors. Hmmm, I'll have to hint around to my friend that it's about time to go back up there. :rolleyes1

Careful!! ;) During the "Double the Zoo" campaign, Binder Park consulted with Disney to build the new section. That's how we ended up taking a Disney vacation. :lmao: We were greeted with "Jambo!" before our safari jeep transported us to a different time zone ;) , started walking along the path, saw the giraffes, made more comparisons with AK, recognized the "feel" of AK, and started innocently enough with, "what if we could find some cheap airfare??" And you're right, Disney recruits heavily from Binder Park for AK, or so we're told.

p.s.: love the photos!

We do live in a beautiful state.. I'm just not into downtown Detroit, but Chicago. Our furnace is about 3 years old or so.. and our furnace is not working, we had someone come to look at it, it's the motor that blows the air.. blah. he said it would be about $700, but will give us a discount of about $100 if we go with their company to get a new motor. We're calling next week! It is getting a bit too cold in the house, especially early in the morning!

I do love fall in Michigan!!

We were in Ann Arbor yesterday and saw U of M beat Wisconsin. Holy cow was that an amazing second half!

I don't live in Michigan (in fact I'm a Wisconsinite!) but my dad went to UM for law school so I'm a Wolverine fan. :) So awesome that UM beat Bucky!   We were at the UM-UW game in 2006 and that was fun. I've also been to a few other Michigan games including their last 2 Rose Bowls and the Capital One Bowl this year.

I lived about 5 miles north of the Air Base, I'd have to pass it every day to get to work.

I used to go to Air Force Beach there on Van Etten Lake. I'd go fishing there too but not much luck for that. The best place for fishing was on the AuSable river by the River Queen. HUGE Large Mouth bass over there.

Where have all the Michigan DIS fans gone???
What a awesome fall day in Michigan......it's supposed to hit 80 today!!!:thumbsup2

Yes, it's a great weekend in Michigan. Yesterday was gorgeous, and today is shaping up to be just as beautiful. :yay:

In fact, I should get off the computer and go enjoy the outdoors. Well, maybe in a few minutes... ;)

Hi Michiganders!! I was wondering where this thread went! I was going to bump it up to page one.. but couldn't find it. Anyways..

This actor Whittaker (forgot the first name) was here in Detroit in 3 different areas to endorse Obama.

Carol King was also in Michigan (forgot what city) to endorse Obama.

Last week Bruce Springsteen was also here in East Lansing (EMU) to endorse Obama.

I wanted to see Carol King perform, but unfortunately I couldn't.

I really miss being in Michigan this time of year. I miss the leaves changing, apple picking, hay rides, etc. We used to have to rake pounds of acorns off our roof in East Lansing.

I miss going to Robinette's in Grand Rapids for cider and donuts.

I also miss chipmunks. We don't have those here in Florida and they are just too cute.

I still order sour cherry patches (candy) for my kids stockings from Cherry Republic.

We used to drive out to Ferrysburg every Sunday and stop at Miss Lisa's for a hot dog and ice cream and then go to North Beach park (I don't know if that's the correct name or not.)

We are really happy that Michigan State is doing so well this year in Football. I wish we were still there so we could catch a game or two.

I have yet to find decent pizza here in Florida. I'd travel to Michigan just for pizza if I could.

I don't miss Gov. Granholm. Yuck. Never liked her and never will. Im glad Kwame is out of office but I don't think much has changed for Detroit.

Yum! We had some of those just a few weeks ago. Love, love , love their cherry coated malted milk balls![/COLOR]

Glad YOUR team is doing well!

That's the main reason we're still in Michigan. Not leaving the state without my Palermo's Pizza! :woohoo: :rotfl2:

Ditto! :thumbsup2

This is the one time of year I miss Michigan. :guilty: I love the fall: mums, pumpkins, leaves everywhere, U of M football (OK not so much this year, lol), I could go on and on.

GO GREEN!!!

Fall is awesome in MI......I guess I didnt realize it until I met someone from CA, who had never seen trees change color like we have.....Cider and donuts----GOOOOD.

I will try to post some fall photos here......I deer hunt.....was in my stand last night......saw lots of chipmunks & squirrels (they squawk at me while in my stand!!) and deer!!!

I am no fan of Granholm either....I work for the state....she is raping state employees......no raises, doubled health ins. premiums, but hey I thought the DEMS took care of gov.......NOT...Oh, but she has gotten her buddies some great state contracts for construction.......multi million dollar buildings in Lansing we dont need.......Dont even get me started.....She is a joke...send her back to Canada......closing state parks too!!!

Poor Detroit....I just heard on the news today......GM was going to possibly try to buy Chrysler......????????

Hello Michiganders... from your fellow Michigander!:wave2:

What places do you like visiting in Michigan when not going out of state for a vacation? :Pinkbounc

My favorite is the Mackinac Island/Mackinac City. I also like going to Traverse City. As far as the beach, I like going to Ludington. :beach:

In no particular order:

The Grand Traverse resort and the wineries around there - our favorite romantic, kid-free spot

The ranch outside of Muskegon and Michigan's Adventure amusement park with the kids

Alpena/Posen to visit family

My family has land near Baldwin, where we camp.

Not really a vacation, but we do stay overnight - we never miss the Renaissance Festival, except in years when we have newborns (both my girls are late summer babies)

And of course the Irish Hills and MIS

We still try to go to Detroit once in a while. We'll usually have dinner somewhere after a sporting event or something like that. It does always make me sad though, when we drive through the city. I am still in awe when I look at the beauty of those old, magnificent buildings. DH and I have ben talking about going down to Greektown for a while, but we haven't gotten ourselves down there. Has anyone else been down there lately?

We go into the city pretty often, but it doesn't make me sad. I'm younger than most of you I think, and from my earliest memories of the city until now there has been a lot of improvement. I'm not a big fan of the casinos because of the accompanying social issues, but they seem to get more people into the city, and I love the new fields for the Lions and Tigers. And I'm super-excited to see what they've done with the Book-Cadillac. We're getting a room and Lions tickets for DS's birthday just to check it out.

I really miss the city, truth be told, and I'd be down there a lot more if we lived closer and didn't have 3 kids' schedules to juggle. DH & I plan to move downtown in that distant someday when the kids are grown and gone; small town life is great for raising kids, but not something I'd choose for myself.

Gratuitous Detroit picture from our last venture downtown:
