EVERY food product is shrinking!!!

Because your government probably cares more about your health more than the US government. Too many people that work in the bodies that govern food in the US previously worked for the food companies that put the crap in our food.

There are economic reasons as well. We impose tariffs on imported cane sugar; Canada doesn't. We also subsidize our corn industry to a greater degree than any other nation. The combination of those two factors makes HFCS the cheaper sweetener in the US, but in other nations cane and beet sugars are both more price-competitive.

I'm growing sugar beets for the first time this year because I just can't settle on a good store-bought choice; beet sugar is a local product for me but is virtually all GMO, and cane sugar is an expensive item that comes a very long way. We don't go through a lot of sugar, maybe 10# in a year, so I'm going to try my hand at growing my own. It is an experiment to be sure, but my garden is nothing if not experimental... I'm trying trellises for my squash and melons this year (buttercup vines are taller than me :faint:) but I've already learned that squash vines are much more obedient than watermelon, which grow up the trellis while simply pulling out more vines to trail along the ground as well.

One other thing I notice while in the U.S. is that High Fructose Corn Syrup is in so many products. It is crazy really. Even in the orange juice cartons, popcicles ect ect. I saw it listed on just so many things. Here in Canada I rarley see HFCS in anything. Never in juice, mostly just in some candy. Weird.

The thing is, although it is not made from corn, glucose-fructose (in many, many of our products) is pretty much the same as HFCS in terms of the high fructose part and how our bodies deal with the sugar.

Don't shoot the messenger, but if you are buying Organic, unless it's is labeled 100% organic, it is most likely not really organic. It can be up to 80% non-organic, with only 20% of the ingredients actually organic and be legally labeled organic. Sorry :(

I try and buy organic where I think it counts, fresh fruit & veg, milk etc...but anything processed, it is really hard to find 100%, and if it's not labeled as 100%, it's not organic so not worth it.

BTW, this goes for non-food products also. If something made with cotton says it is made from organic cotton, unless it says 100% organic cotton, it's not really made with organic cotton.

Yeah this is another reason why I think the organics from the megaindustrials are... like organic Lucky Charms or Cheez-its or what have you... really? Heh.

I remember Kate Gosselin being really dippy about ALL ORGANIC!!! but feeding her kids crap on the regular and going on about how healthy the diet was. Hint, Kate, that doesn't make anything healthy.

It's sad the advertising isn't clearer and that it's also not more known which crops are more sprayed and etc.

Glue sticks! I have no proof, but there must be less in that tube!

My DD can go though a small glue stick in one sitting, and 1/2 way though the school year the teacher was begging for more for the classroom.

Walmart has them for $0.10 each (loose, not in packs). I grabbed about 20 yesterday and will get more each time I go in!

The cheaper ones have almost nothing in them.

That's one of those things where the name brand is worth the extra price. Store brand sticks are mostly packaging with little glue. I stock up on Elmers at back-to-school sales because they're the only ones that last for more than a couple sessions of use.

Dang tortillas. I use to make 12 enchiladas, but now there are only 10 in a package. Of course, the first time, I didn't notice until I had them home. It really becomes annoying when you have been making the same recipe for years and they switch things up on you.

At least a gallon of milk is still a gallon. Wait, it still is right? ;)

The toilet paper not being as wide really irks me the most. I don't know why? Maybe because I use it throughout the day and notice it every time? The other products I can either substitute or do entirely without, but not TP. Well, I guess I could use a "family cloth", but I not ready to go there yet. :crazy2:

Ditto on the toilet paper. When it first started happening it drove me crazy because our "toilet paper holder" has two springy things that hold the paper instead of a roll. The "thinner" rolls kept falling off! Drove me crazy!

Here are some bigger than average products I've found:

The baby Goldfish have more ounces than the regular Goldfish bags.
The big CheezIts have more ounces than the regular ones.
The red box of Brownies is still large and I can make two small batches of it (split the recipe; it's 1.75 cups or so of mix and cook in my toaster oven).
And my fav... The Starbucks coffee bags are printed with an offer to bring the empty bag into a Starbucks for a free tall coffee"

So there's a few good things to look for... Until they change.

Yeah I agree TP shrinkage causes it to come off the holder (just slides on no inner core). Never noticed that happening before:mad:

That's because of the less effective "environmentally friendly" adhesives that they're using.

So far, but a gallon of WATER from Poland Spring and Deer Park are no longer gallons. They look the same and are the same price but are a few ounces short.
