Everthing you wanted to know about Uber/Lyft at WDW

Thanks for this thread. I recently joined Uber and found it very simple to use to get around Cincinnati. So, I would like to use it for my upcoming trip but want to make sure I understand and confirm it will work before I cancel my rental car. I will need transportation for 4 from Saratoga Springs Resort to Royal Pacific Hotel at Universal early morning around 7:30 am to take advantage of express passes and then return to SSR the next evening. Uber will be able to accomplish this, correct?

Correct!

I too thank you for this thread!! We are arriving Wednesday and will take a car service to our hotel but would like to walk to BLT our home resort (even though we aren't staying there this trip) and use Uber to get back to MCO on Sunday. It's been tough to find a clear answer on this possibility but you've done a great job at clearing up all of my questions and concerns. I would love to use Uber instead of cabs while in WDW.

We tend to use cabs often as the bus can take so long. We will be at POR this trip. We usually have taxis drop us at Beach club and walk to Epcot and I also use them for DTD. Will I have issues using Uber for these purposes?

Question : We have a 6am flight the day after we check out (we will be at MVMCP and probably get back to the hotel to retrieve baggage at around 2 or 230.) What are the chances of being able to get an Uber car to take us to MCO at 3 am? I'm assuming that Magical Express isn't going to let us use the service since we are checking out at 11 am on the 13th but need transportation at 3 am on the 14th. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would think calling for a cab would be more reliable than Uber at that time of morning. Since the parks will be closed and there's not really many bars in the area letting out at that time, Uber may be few and far between. You could always check the Uber app first to see how far one is, and then opt to call a cab instead if need be.

Shouldnt be a problem.

Theres an over night group of drivers who love that time of the morning for all the airport rides.

We have never used Uber but have heard of it.(we have it here in Porltland now). We have only taken a taxi once in California when we got stranded one night. Hubby was thinking maybe of taking a taxi to get some beer, milk and breakfast items when we get to our hotel. But Now I am thinking Uber may be a better way to go.
So Question is could we take a Uber from Sports to a grocery store and then call another one when we get done shopping and they would be okay taking our grocerys with us?

We are looking to use Uber to take us from DYC to church and then after church take us to DTD/DS do we just ask the driver on the way to church if their available after or when we get out find whose in the area? For these short stays after drops, like church, shopping, etc, whats the advisable way to handle those trips?

Also how does qty of people affect the fare? I know we can't ask about fares, but when I looked it up online they don't allow you to put in passengers, just destinations to get fare.

Thank you SO much for this thread, and all the info and feedback, I wish I could tip you now. This is saving us from renting a car at airport, tolls, then hassle of trying to get car back to a rental facility in parks at an hour their open and still make dinner or if in the morning make park opening. So much less hassle, but I thought cabs were the only way, and when priced were cost of a rental car.

What's the best way to estimate an uber ride price before arriving? Can I do it from my app at home or is there a contact?

Hoping to Uber from an offsite hotel to the contemporary and back for the 24h day next year.

Oh also do you pick up from the Sanford airport even though you don't from MCO?

Correct - Uber doesn't allow riders to request rides from MCO. However, there are currently no restrictions from the Sanford airport.

I asked DBF (who is an Uber driver), and this is what he said: "You have two options once you get to the store. You can thank the driver and have him be on his way, as per a normal ride. Then when you get to the check out lane, open up the app and request another Uber ride. Or you could ask your driver to wait there, keeping "the meter running" (i.e., not marking the ride as ended), and ask him to enter a new destination of back to your hotel. Your fare would simply continue to increase at the per minute rate while he sits there waiting for you. For the driver, it's going to be up to him whether he wants to sit there and collect the additional (small) fare and get the guaranteed additional fare back to your hotel, or if he'd rather mark your ride as complete and attempt to pick up another (larger) fare from another rider. For you, the tradeoff is spending the additional per minute rate for him to sit there waiting for you vs. taking the time to wait for another Uber driver to come get you from the store, plus paying the additional base fare for the second ride.

Either way, yes, your Uber driver is fine with transporting your groceries as well. We expect you to have luggage, esp. in a high-touristy area."

You won't be requesting a specific Uber driver. When you're done with church, open the app again and request another ride. The ride request will go to the closest Uber driver who is not currently on a ride. For shorter stays after a trip (like grocery shopping), see my DBF's quote above for how to handle those. Keep in mind, it is completely up to the discretion of the Uber driver if they want to wait for you during your shopping or mark the trip ended and search for another fare.

If you have 1-4 passengers, you can request either an UberX or an UberXL. UberXL fares are higher than UberX fares. If you have 5-6 passengers, you must request an UberXL. The rate for either vehicle type does not change with the number of passengers.

What is the actual name of the app?

Uber :)

You can do it from your app at home:

1) Open up the Uber app
2) Type in your pick up location
3) Tap the Set Pick Up Location button
4) On the bottom left, hit the button that says Fare Estimate
5) Enter your destination
6) The app will display your estimated fare, in a range

Yah. No problem at all.

As a frequent Uber user in LA (fantastic way to get around!), thanks for all the info! I have learned a lot about Uber from this thread and look forward to using it at WDW. Don't ask why I've always just used Mears....Uber from now on in FL.

When does Surge Pricing typically go into effect? Is is always on weekend evenings or is it random?

Here is my view on the tip thing. I use Uber BECAUSE a tip isn't required. I do not carry cash normally, even when traveling. I may carry a few dollars, but that is about it. If a tip was really necessary then they should have it built into the app. I'm also an accountant so I get a little irritated at cash tips since they are so easy to be hidden from being taxable income, so that is another reason I don't like tips. :)

What size should we request when transfer between resorts? 2 adults, 2 small teens and 5 bags.

Surge pricing may be random. Neither myself nor DBF have experience with driving on weekend evenings (yet), so I can't say for sure. But one minute there could be surge pricing, and the next minute, not. If you see surge pricing, try waiting like 10 minutes. Then go back into the app and see if the surge is still in effect.

An UberX will be a sedan, so the 4 of you will fit. However, depending on the driver's trunk space, you may or may not have to put your bags on your laps. If you want to be guaranteed to have a little extra room, and you're willing to pay the extra money, I would go with an UberXL.

Thanks for the tip about waiting.:-)
Much appreciated.

Everyone who drives for uber wants them to add the option in app. Lyft has it already. I hate cash too.
