Ever wonder how much EXTRA your driver makes if you are paying surge pricing?

Well, Uber has an amusing app glitch going on right now in Miami that shows you! It's on the driver's app, so you can't see it -- but as a public service I swiped a screenshot of Miami International Airport last night.

You'll see two numbers there -- one is 1.7x, and the other is $4. Due to the glitch, Uber is showing drivers both sides of the surge -- what the rider is paying, and what the driver is getting.

Since they're showing us, I thought it only fair that you should be able to see it, lol.

1.7x is the surge multiplier the RIDER is paying.

So for example, for DD, DW and myself returning from a trip, I would take XL -- and to my house, that is usually about $45. At 1.7x, $31.50 surge is added and I would pay $76.50.

$4 is the portion of the surge the driver would be paid.

So $31.50 extra for Uber, $4 for the driver.

BTW, Lyft does exactly the same thing.

Yeah, wow.

The sad thing about surge pricing is that riders hate it and lash out. They often take their anger out on the drivers with no tips and/or low ratings.

Yes and no. Some drivers (especially newbies) are attracted by surges until they learn better. Others not so much.

Here in Miami, we have a number of very large events between December-May, and for some of those a lot of drivers simply stay home. For example, this weekend we have a huge boat show (4 venues) and two art festivals, one of which will draw more than a million people over three days. I'm at home.

Superbowl was a mess a couple of weeks ago, but that is due as much to the terrible traffic around the stadium as it is to the surge problem. Some people waited for two hours for rides!

I think where it really affects riders is probably college campuses. College campuses are not big favorites to begin with and when they surge that makes them even less attractive.

We also have Uber Pool and Lyft Shared here, and I'm sure those riders have trouble when surges are in effect. Drivers don't like those rides anyway, and you'd have to be brain-dead to take one during any busy period.

my mom uses a former uber driver to take her wherever she needs to go...
he was her 3rd driver years ago when she first started using uber...
after the first 2 rather questionable drivers (bad drivers who had no clue where anything was), this guy showed up and my mom fell in love...LOL..
he's been her driver ever since....not through uber...direct..
he stopped working with uber after he got several customers like my mom who use him regularly...
it's so great for my mom and i guess for him as well....
for one thing, he doesn't have to worry about what kind of customer he might get..
and the same is true for his customers..
the funny thing is, he went to high school with my sister..
on that very first drive he asked my mom if she's related to my sister, and he was so happy to find out the relationship..
so it's almost family at this point...LOL..

anyway, the private driving really is fantastic and for people like my mom, who's now legally blind and can no longer drive herself, it's a godsend!!!!!!!!

No. Private rides are illegal in Florida.

she's in michigan. I have no idea if it's illegal or not. But it's a needed service.
She and all her friends (all in their 90s) need a private driver of this kind.
Someone they know and can trust.
And someone who goes that extra mile, as in gets out of the car and escorts them into wherever it is they are going.
To force them to use not really vetted uber drivers (as you can see, i'm very anti-uber), is both unsafe and unfair.
