Evert try getting a car as a walkin @ the CCC

The car rental rates have been very high and Dh and I want to try the busses for the first time EVER so we are not getting a car. In case we want to take a day and go somewhere in a car, can you walk in and get one? What are the rates like?

Astronomical. It's like walking into a hotel with no reservation - they charge you the rack rate. A car rental agency would do the equivalent; they sort of have you over a barrel (not to mention, you actually couldn't just walk in; you'd need to take their shuttle, and they probably won't even pick you up without an existing reservation).

Well, you could still get any rate you qualify for (AAA, Corporate, etc) and use coupons but it would be harder to compare rates. You can always book online the day you need the car. I've done this and picked up a car 30 minutes after renting it. You can also call either the national 800 number or the local office number to make a reservation.

I had to book a car at the counter once when I accidentally rented for the wrong weekend. I was still able to use my corporate code and weekend coupon. The rate was the same as the one I booked online for the wrong weekend.

I would recommend finding a good rate now and make a couple reservations. You can always cancel without penalty.

One thing that might happen is they say they have no cars.

On a trip for work, we walked up to the rental counter and they couldn't find my reservation and they said they had no cars.

I got online to start looking for my reservation in my email and couldn't find it, so went to their website and booked another reservation right quick. Now granted, I wasn't worried about cost, but I'm just saying, they don't do well without reservations.
