I serve on an important regulatory body at the university, and we have been taking a lot of flak for some of the regulations we impose upon faculty and staff at the university as enforcers of federal laws. The issue has begun to really hit home the past several months and I have been under a lot of pressure from colleagues to advocate a challenge to some of the policies. After reading carefully all of the federal regulations we are charged with enforcing (I knew that legal training would come in handy some time!), it was my considered opinion that we were not correctly enforcing the regulations and were making life unnecessarily tough on our colleagues. I was roundly booed, was forced to get nasty in going to the mat for my position, and was chastised twice by the board's legal counsel. Well....they contacted the feds today and my position was precisely and inarguably the correct one and the correct legal opinion (though not being a lawyer I can't give a legal opinion
). Given that it was a very nasty and very drawn out meeting, I take special satisfaction in being vindicated and in successfully challenging the way that the policy has been interpreted and enforced for lots of years.
Just needed to share. BTW, many of my colleagues now consider me a hero because I have likely saved them hours and hours of work every year.
