Ever spent New Year's Eve in Times Square?

I have never been in Times Square but I have friends who apartment overlooks it so we’ve done NYE at their place. We could use their balcony and the roof of the apartment. Same for the thanksgiving parade I’ve seen it from a balcony but have no interest in being in the crowds.

Headed to NYC today!

Almost. Before dh and I were married we decided to go one year. We lived in nyc so we didn’t travel far for this. We got there early evening and saw what it was like. We left and just had dinner somewhere. Never attempted it again. We had no idea it was like that (this was many years ago and we were young).

I have a friend who works on ABC's New Years Eve Special. He gets to freely move through Times Square with an NYPD escort and an All Access Pass. If I had his job I DEFINITELY would gladly spend New Year's Eve in Times Square. Standing in one of those corrals and then having to figure out how to get back home with thousands of others? No thank you. I'll watch it on TV and stumble up to bed :D

Did when in my 20’s too, long ago now, and was no corrals back then. Have no desire to ever be in NYC this time of year. Watch on my TV. My one kid wants to go back, maybe in the late spring. We are a short train ride away. I would never drive in. I wait until the train tickets are cheap.

They should sell tickets for about $25 and donate the proceeds to various NYC charities. Then start letting people in about 10pm, none of this jailed for 12 hours nonsense.

My mother said she and a few friends went when they were young adults in the mid 1950s. It wasn’t necessary to arrive early. People didn’t start showing up until after 11pm. Of course it wasn’t a TV spectacular back then.
How much for the lightening lane? $50?

I don’t have a desire to do so, but if did I would save up my money and do one of the private parties. I don’t know if that’s what they’re called or not. They are probably about $1,000 per person and you get to eat and drink and see the ball drop from your private area but you’re not in the mix of the people outside. Once again, I don’t really want to but if I were I’d gladly spend that amount of money to not stand outside in one spot cramped all day.

No way. I can’t imagine not being able to leave and being crammed in with a bunch of people.
I did attend a concert at Madison Square garden on New Years Eve. It was 98 and it was a Phish concert. I was a junior in high school and went with my older sister. The crowds taking the train back to CT were crazy but it was all fun as a 17 year old. I would probably get stressed out trying this now.

Yes! I think it was 2010 but I would have to look at old pictures to be sure.

Had a pizza lunch and we were herded into the corrals sometime around noon. The whole process was a bit confusing honestly and we almost didn't make it in there.
I was a youngster at the time so I had never heard of Depends. I held it for 13+ hours to include the walk back to the hotel. The hard part actually wasn't the lack of bathrooms, but rather all the standing. Some people sat down from time to time, but there wasn't enough room for everyone to do that. We brought some food "snacks" in our pockets. The crowd wasn't bothersome and we got free hats. The confetti and the actual countdown were fantastic.

It was a bucket list item and I'm glad I did it. Never again though.

My son (19) and I did it last NYE! It was amazing!! BUT it was a fluke year and we just happened to luck out in every way imaginable! They were not filling the “pens” to capacity and they weren’t staring to fill them till 2 PM due to Covid. Also it was freakishly warm, close to 60 degrees, I never even zipped my coat up. We got in line for a pen at 2 but they shut the line down when we were only about 50 people back, they were all full. At that point the only way to get into the Times Square area was to have a dinner reservation so we quickly made one online for Ellen’s Stardust Diner. From what I understand that party usually sells out way in advance but due to Covid tickets we’re still available and had actually decreased in price. With our reservation we were able to get past the barricades and into the “frozen zone”. We had hours before the party so we just wandered around. Some streets had blockades but some we could get down. We eventually made it to a pen right up front by the marriot marquis. We stood outside the pen for about 15 minutes just watching everything going on. There were police and reporters everywhere. We kept thinking they would tell us to move because there were no other people around except in the pens. Eventually a very nice police officer we started talking to actually let us into the pen. We felt like we had struck gold and decided to forget about the party and stay right there all night. We took lots of photos and videos. Since the pens were only 25% capacity there was plenty of room to sit/lay down. Lots of people were using the foam hats as pillows. Some people were even getting pizza delivered! After a few hours we were getting a bit bored and decided to ditch the pen and go to the party after all. The party was amazing!!!! I would highly recommend Ellen’s!!! It was so fun! They let us out at 11:50 and we knew we’d have to watch the ball drop from farther back (Ellen’s is a few blocks away). Then something completely unexpected happened. Right before the drop a huge group of people who were on the street pushed down the small barricade and started running up the street. We would not have done this ourselves, but with everyone else running we ran too. We made it up the street and to the M&M store right by the Times Square stairs in time for all the confetti to fall. It was absolutely amazing!!! It will always be one of my best memories just for the freak nature of how it all came together to be the best experience ever. It would not have been so fun if it was cold and if we had stood packed in with other people for over 12 hours without a bathroom, that would have sucked!! Standing there while they play New York, New York and Imagine and confetti falls on you is pretty spectacular! We had a hotel just outside the frozen zone, the Royalton, so walking back was no problem at all either. Under normal conditions I totally understand why people hate it, but it always looked like a cool once in a lifetime thing to me and I’m so glad my son and I got to have the experience we did once!

Tried to -2011, it was so mild too. Went directly from WDW to NYC. And was so excited. Someone sweetly gave me show tickets for that night, and that interrupted us re-entering.

The story is on this page of a WDW trip report, I was frustrated at first not to be where I had wanted but the night ended up magical regardless -

Have a wonderful time. So envious, just to be in that glorious city.
