We are considering the possibility of renting a beach house for the week next summer (2007) in the Outer Banks area. Has anyone ever done this, and if so, what sort of rental place did you go through? We want an Oceanfront house and it will have to be pretty big as we are going to be six adults and 5-7 kiddies, so that sort of leaves out any condos or anything like that.

What areas are best down there? My only experience with the area is really the grounds of The Sanderling Hotel. We had a conference there and I barely ever left the place for a week.

It is pretty hard to figure out what is a reputable rental place when it seems like there are thousands and thousands of rental companys on the net! I'd love any suggestions with actual experiences!

Thanks!

We used to rent there, how I miss it! We don't go anymore since no one can ever get the time off or commit financially, but I still hope someday we can return! But when we used to go, we rented in Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo area. It was so nice being down there, just loved living the beach lifestyle for the week! :cloud9: We used two different rental agencies which were great - Outer Beaches Reality and also Surf or Sound. Midgett is another good one. The Northern Outer Banks is very lovely, too, with many huge houses in subdivisions, and some different rental agencies cover that area.

But renting in the Outer Banks is actually very economical, as large beach houses in other areas of the NE are astromonical in price when compared! Hope you can go, and find the perfect house! :)

We've stayed there a couple times. Most recently in 2002. A few rental places I can think of are listed below. You can go to each website and tell them you want to be on their mailing list. They'll send you a property catalog in the Fall. In the meantime, use their website search features to familiarize yourself with what's available and how much they cost.

We go every year. If you have that many adults to split the cost, an ocean front is totally doable. You'll love it. If you want quiet - try Duck or Corolla...if you want more action and restaurant - try Kitty Hawk or Nags Head.

We usually use Sun Realty.

If you check out hatterasrealty.com click on el Magnifico- that's my sister's house :sunny:

 Me! Me! We go there every year. We go in June when it is the last week of "mid season" rates. We rent at about the 17.5 mile marker in South Nags Head. The company we go through is Stan White Realty. It is about tied with WDW for our favorite vacation spot in the world - but then again, we haven't been MANY places. We lead pretty sheltered lives!

Feel free to PM me if I can help answer any questions about OBX!

Have you tried vrbo.com? In addition to using it for a Florida vacation home, I've also used it to find a rental on Long Island. Both times it worked out well for us. It offers rentals by owner which is sometimes cheaper than finding a rental through an agency.

Last time we were there we used Outer Beaches Reality and stayed in the Duck area. WE LOVE to visit the light houses and also see the outdoor drama "The Lost Colony" :lovestruc

PS was anybody there when they were moving the Hatteras Light House to save it from the eroding beach? That was amazing to watch! :thumbsup2

:wave2:

We've been going to OBX for years and love it. We stay in Frisco also which is down near Hatteras We use Midgettrealty.com They are great to work with. The prices are good, the beaches are beautiful and you can have a fire on the beach which is nice. If you go as far as Frisco it's pretty quiet. There's not alot to do other then beach things. There is a ferry to Ocracoke which has a huge beach bike rentals and cute shopping, dining, ice cream, etc.

Thanks to everyone for your advice and rental company recomendations! This will give us a whole LOT to check out!
