And need a serious budget intervention??? :rotfl2:

I have a formal event (black tie) to attend this weekend. I found a really pretty black and white gown at bloomingdales for 170 bucks. great price, looks good and then...........
I was driving home and stopped in the local formal wear store looking for an evenign bag and that's where I saw it... A gun metal gown by Mon Cher (bridal designer) for 710.00 bucks. :scared1: I immediately thought about selling a kidney.
I guess my saner self says not only is it pricey but I don't go to formal affairs, this is the first one in 15 years.

but boy that little devil on my shoulder is definitely whispering "ahh go on, you'll look maaarvelous". ;)

Ever had one of those things?

Yes, but then I think, that would almost pay for half a trip to Disney. ;)

Yes...but it was over a sofa. It was in the Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware catalog. It was a huge and super deep. It was practically a bed. But I was able to imagine sitting/laying back, watching a great movie, all cuddled up with my DH and a cozy blanket.

$5,000.

I still wish we bought it even though it was expensive & impractical.

Is it possible to rent the handbag for the evening? I know...sounds odd...but when I was a bridesmaid for my friend in England, they rented the dresses. It makes so much more sense. Men rent tuxes all the time.

just a thought....

It's a gown not a handbag, she was looking for the bag and found the gown.

OP yes, but I usually manage to restrain myself, not to mention the fact that it's 2 car payments....hahahahaha

If it doesn't seriously impact your budget, get it. You only get to go to a black tie every 15 years - and you will look maahvelous!

Treat yourself!

That happens to me a lot with dresses when I don't have anywhere to wear it! :rotfl:

Along with what a previous poster said, a freind of mine uses a site called rent the runway where you can just rent a dress so you pay less and you only wear it once (which most of the time you do anyway with fancy dresses). Maybe they have a similar dress to your beloved!

I am the QUEEN of justification. So I am the little devil saying "Get it!". For me it was an adorable desk at Pottery Barn Kids. I am short and it fit me PERFECTLY!!! So much space! So beautiful!!!! I didn't get it, but I still want it! :rotfl2: It has been about 7 years and I still think of that desk, even though I got a cheaper desk at Target.

If I could afford it, I would get it and then sell it as soon as you were done with it. If you can get some money back from it, that would be awesome!

Lately, it's boots. I have a very hard time getting decent looking boots that fit me and haven't owned a pair for many years. I finally found a place that carries them and ordered a pair for myself for Christmas. They were over $200, and I'm a $40/max for footwear kinda woman. I made dh and the kids promise not to get me anything else for Christmas.

They are so beautiful and comfortable. But I won't wear them often because I don't wear skirts too much in the winter. I think I own a total of three winter skirts. I will have them for years, so I don't regret the purchase.

But... I find myself surfing the website where I bought them and fantasizing about buying more lovely boots. Which I need like a hole in the head...

One I think of often is a dress I bought to wear for the rehearsal dinner for my wedding. It was $218 and I thought it was outrageous but I had to have it. The good news is I've worn it a bazillion times in the 9+ years I've had it and always get compliments when I wear it. I might wear it on my next cruise in May. Yay!

Boots are my weakness too, not shoes but boots. lol I have 3 pair of cowboy boots (but I do "work" in a country bar so I do wear them 1-4 nights per week), black, brown and red. I got the red pair on Shoebuy for over half off, they were $65 and they are normally $120-$160 depending on where you buy them. I also got a great promo code for Shoebuy and bought myself 2 really amazing pairs of black boots (not cowboy style) for over half off. I got the first pair yesterday, fur lined with stiletto heels, fit perfectly, the next pair should come tomorrow. I love boots. lol But when I get them I wear them forever, I have a pair I bought 3 years ago from Victoria's Secret for $70 and they are in great shape and I wear them constantly. My day job is at a warehouse so I won't wear them here but I will wear them as much as possible on weekends. LOL In fact, I'm planning a "date night" with DBF just so I can wear my new sweater dress and boots. LOL

With things that I love and really want, but can't justify spending on, I end up taking away from things I'd normally spend during the month or the month after. For instance, I really wanted this adorable dress from modcloth that cost $225. (Hey, that's a ton of money to me, I'm a college student!)

I cut out going to Starbucks for 2 months, eating all fast food out for 1 month, going to the movies for 2 months, and only gave myself $50 spending money for a month instead of my usual $150. Not only did I get my dress, I lost weight from not eating out so much or going to Starbucks as much. The funny thing is when I first got my dress it fit snug, and after the 2nd month it was loose on me. So I guess I did myself 2 favors. I love that dress and it is just as amazing as I thought it'd be, so I say go for the little devil on your shoulder that's telling you how amazing you'll look. And then let your little shoulder angel help you come up with a plan to take things from other areas to help even out the cost.

I really really want a Michael Kors watch right now and the one I like is $250! I can't afford this and I have never worn a watch but I feel like I need it!:cool1:

For a little perspective, my wedding dress only cost $550. Personally, I could never justify spending that much on a dress that I would only wear once, especially if I wouldn't be hiring a professional photographer to take pictures of me in it.

check http://www.renttherunway.com/ my daughters' friends have used them for gorgeous prom/ball gowns.

That was going to be my suggestion.
