My DD 11 is going to a week long camp again this year & I'm thinking about taking a trip w/ DS for some quality time together. Being homesick is not a worry. But this would mean neither DH or myself would be home. My sister said she'd be "on call" if she needed something. What would you do?

You said DD is going AGAIN so I am assuming she has done this before. If you know she is OK with being away from home and you are close enough to get back home quickly if needed I say go for it. My DS will be going away to Boy Scout camp for a week this summer. This will be the first time he has been away from home more than one night without us. I know he will be fine - just hopes he takes at least one shower......

Have a great time and your DS will be fine.

Yes! DS went to the same summer camp for about five years. The first two or three we never went anywhere. But the last two years (he was 14 & 15 by then) we went to WDW! It was great! We knew he loved camp--the summer when he was 15 he went for six weeks straight, and when we came to visit on one of the changeover days between sessions, we took him to Burger King and he just wanted to get back to his friends at camp! :)

The camp had our cell numbers, as well as the number of a dear friend who lived about an hour from the camp who had agreed to pick him up if there was an emergency, so we felt comfortable with it.

The FIRST year I went to Summer camp my mother went to Europe. (My dad was at home) After that she headed out every year! LOL!

I always spent 6 weeks at summer camp from the 7th grade on up and yes my parents went on vacation everytime. :thumbsup2

When our son went to summer camp my dh and I also went on vacation. Was I a bad parent, nah just needed a well deserved vacation. :thumbsup2

I would do it if it wasn't her first year at that camp and you had reasonable expectations that it would go well since you do have family ready to step in should your dd need it.

After the first year or two you pretty much know how your dd will handle being away from you and you obviously have faith in the camp itself or you wouldn't be trusting them with your dd in the first place.

Sounds like you have your bases covered, so go have fun!

I´d go and have a great time with DS. As long as you have someone on call, in case of emergencies, I wouldn´t hesitate to go.

We're going away to the beach this summer when my 2 teens are at summer camp. There's always the cell phone if there is an emergency. Can't wait!! :cool1:

Not me but my parents did. A bad accident happened to my mom while they were away and NO one told me until my Dad came to pick me up the end of the week.

It is good that you have family there if you are away. I hope your DSis does better than my aunts did. (My cousin was even at chuch camp with me and they didn't tell me anything, even knnowing where I was.)

I am considering it - there are two things holding me back & neither is the boys. The money & the fact that DH will use all of his leave during our family vacation this summer. The boys will be going to two one week scout camps this summer. My brother will be a local emergency contact if we go away. The scouts require authorization fro medical treatment.

Although it must have been upsetting for you to find out your Mom was injured, there probably wasn't anything you could have done for her.
It is unlikely that I would send for my kids from camp unless there was a chance that DH or I wouldn't survive. Otherwise, DH/I could tend to the other while the boys were safe, cared for, feed & entertained at camp.

I went to WDW for my band trip last month. We are in Pennsylvania. The band drove down to FL on a tour bus. We left Friday, got there Saturday, left FL Wednesday and got home Thursday. My parents went to Las Vegas. They left Saturday and my dad got home Wednesday night. So they were gone basically the whole time I was. I was perfectly fine. Other than band camp, that was the first time I was away from home. I survived. In fact, I had a blast with all my friends. I say go and have a good time. It really didn't matter to me if my parents were home or not. If they were home, though, I know they would have went down to WDW to watch me perform and march in the parade.
