ever dealt with a broken finger?

We were visiting relatives on Sunday when our DD13 decided to shoot a few hoops. On the third try for a basket she went to catch the basketball and it came down and hit the little finger on her right hand. We heard a loud cracking noise, (ewwww), and that was the end of her game. We iced the finger and took her to the emergency room. The x-rays showed a normal finger, no breaks. The ER doctor said the finger was sprained and he taped the finger to the one next to it.

Yesterday, I got a call from the hospital saying that the radiologist took a closer look at the x-rays and saw that the finger actually had a fracture in the lower part. They said to bring her right in to get a splint put on the finger.

So now my daughter has her finger in a splint and her hand all taped up. Of course, she couldn't wait to go to school today. Yesterday the taped fingers were really no big deal, but today she has a lot to show for her injury!

Has anybody else had a child break a finger? How long will it take to heal? We have three kids ranging in age from 23 to 13, and she has the honor of being the first one to break any bones.

My son hurt his finger by falling at recess one day. We just did the "Oh, I'm sorry you got hurt. Let's have a snack" routine, but by nighttime, it had swollen to twice its normal size.

ER radiologist said it wasn't broken, but the tech wasn't convinced and wanted the children's radiologist to look at it. I never heard back from them, so I assumed it wasn't broken (they told me they wouldn't call if it wasn't broken). However, 8 weeks later, it's still a little sore and he can't bend it all the way. I think I'm going to call and ask his doctor if we should have it looked at again.

My daughter has broken fingers playing basketball a few times. The first time it was completely healed within 2 weeks. This last time was a bit worse, it took almost 6 weeks before it felt semi normal and she still can't bend it all the way. She has also broken her collarbone and has been on crutches for an ankle injury. I'm getting to be a pro at sprains and breaks thanks to her and she is only 14!

depends on the location and severity of the break, and the individual involved some people naturaly heal faster than others...

I had on broken finger that healed in about 4 weeks and the finger was back to full usage in 6-8 weeks

another that was broken near the joint took 6-8 weeks to heal and it took about a year for me to regain full usage...

once the splint came off of the worst break.. I got one of those stress reliever balls....I would carrry that wherever I went, gently squeezing it to build up the strength in my finger..

When I was about 12 I was playing basketball and the same thing happened...my pointer finger touched the back of my hand... not good. I HATED the splint and took it off after MAYBE a week. My finger Never healed. I can still feel (12 years later) that it's "wrong" and it hurts sometimes. I know I'll have arthritis in it. Make sure she keeps the splint on for as long as the doc says.

I broke the pinkie on my right hand catching a football. Mine was clearly broken however, becuase it was pointing off to the side. Anyway, like someone else said, it really depends on where it is broken and what kind of break. I had a clean fracture, but it was on a growth plate, so I was in a soft cast all the way to my elbow for 6 weeks. Of course the day after the cast came off my little brother tripped me down the stairs and I broke my wrist --hard cast for 8 weeks. 14 weeks straight with a cast up to the elbow on my right arm--not fun.

forgot to mention...

once my splint came off I was supposed to keep the broken finger taped to my other finger for a while..Dr. said put cotton between fingers so they don't get sore...I found little elastic finger sleeves..kinda like miniature ace bandages. I put one of those on the broken finger for added support, then taped the 2 fingers together...no need for cotton since the little ace bandage kept them seperated...

I taped my fingers for about 2-4 months whenever I was going to play basketball or some physical activity...just to be safe...
