Ever bought a tux from eTuxedo?

My DS18 needs a tuxedo for college choir. If he goes to the local rental place, it will be about $100, which is a rude shock because his high school got a big discount at Men's Wearhouse, and it only cost about $25/year to rent a tux. He would prefer to buy, because he knows he'll need one for the next couple of years (and there's a chance he won't be at this school past this semester, so he'd only get two or three concerts out of his $100). My friend just bought a tux for her son from eTuxedo for $49.99, but hasn't received it yet, so she doesn't know what kind of quality it is. Have you ever bought a tux from either this site or another online site? One concern I have is that they don't give you an option to select the pant size, you just get a pair of pants that is 6 inches smaller than the coat size (so if you order a 42 coat, you get 36 inch pants). My son wears either a 40 or 42 coat, but only a 30 inch waist for the pants, so significant tailoring would have to be done. I don't have any idea how much this would cost, and whether it would be possible to make this big of an adjustment! I called the phone number at the eTuxedo site, and they said this was industry standard. I've never bought a suit for this boy, and DH has always fit pretty well into suits with the matching pants without significant waist alterations, so I have no frame of reference.

Any help? Can you suggest anywhere else I could look for an inexpensive tuxedo? Thanks!

honestly...I don't think I'd even buy a regular suit for $49.99, much less a tuxedo.

Try JCPenney. Also consider some of the rental places that sell gently used tuxedos. My DH is a 4th degree Knight of Columbus and needs a tux for a lot of their activities. We got his first one through a rental place and we purchased the pants, coat, cumberbund, suspenders, studs, tie, two shirts...for $120. It was a nice quality wool blend.

Check consignment shops around the area or ask at the tux rental places if they sell last years tuxes.

Erincon23,

I am the buyer for eTuxedo and am happy to answer all of your questions. First, as to who we are - we have been selling formalwear online since 1998. Our parent organization has been in business since 1933.

All of our tuxedos are brand new, factory fresh, never worn as opposed to the rental stores which often sell their tired inventory. The particular tuxedo you mentioned was made by After-Six, one of the leading formalwear manufacturers in the country. We have just a few of these tuxedos left so we marked them down to finish the lot. We try to be as accurate as we can in our descriptions and images of the merchandise, however, if you have additional questions about any of the items please just give us a call at (888) 879-7848.

With respect to the pant sizes - many tuxedos are made as "separates", meaning coat and pant are sold separately, while others are sold as "nested" suits, meaning the coat and pant come together as a single unit. Separates require specific fabrics which fabric mills can guarantee the color will be precisely the same year in and year out. Nested suits are just like the majority of suits you will find in a suit store. We do have many different styles of separates, however, they run $169.99. You may find polyester tuxedos made as separates on other websites which sell for about $100. Please note, we don't offer these tuxedos because they quite stiff and nowhere near as comfortable as the microfiber tuxedo you are asking about.

Please feel free to call me with any questions. My customer service manager, Marc is in from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm Eastern time. I will be in tomorrow in the afternoon (morning family obligations tomorrow).

i'll second checking with local rental places on purchasing a gently used.

we have purchased from our local place and the values have been awsome. the ones they sell look great, and an added benefit is if you need specialized tailoring you've got staff right there immediatly available to get it set up (and from our experience, at a much lower price than taking a suit/tux to an independant tailor).
