Considering Essure ... I've heard a lot of negative press about it, yet, my gyn is pushing for it...
She says I can't stay on the pill (which I get free on my insurance) any longer since I am over 40 ...

just wondering the costs are and if anyone has had a positive experience with it.
Thanks.

I haven't had it done, but do have a friend that has had nothing but problems and ended up with a hysterectomy as a result of the procedure. Obviously, that is one case and others have had the procedure with success. I do know there are several lawsuits/petitions circulating to stop physicians from performing it, but I'm not sure how big the problem really is. Are you a candidate for an IUD? It would seem like that would be a good choice for someone your age?

No help with Essure but I havent' heard much good about it. I've had a Mirena for about 6 years now and (on my second one) and I love it! It lasts 5 years and my insurance covered it 100%.

Skip over my response if you don't want TMI

I was supposed to get this procedure done next month. My situation is a little different in that I don't want to continue on a birth control meds for another 20 years. I had no problems with pills, had a Mirena come out on its own , then had a paragard removed two months ago- it had adhered to my uterus. The removal was a doozy. I am at my wits end trying to figure out the best option.

I am using Nuvaring in the mean time- an it's fine, but for 20 more years??? I am still researching all of this too.

I also looked into the lady comp as a safer natural alternative. Cost is around $500. Using this in conjunction with checking signs of fertility.

Tons of research to do.

We looked into it after second DS was born and decided to have DH get a vasectomy instead. I don't know of anyone who had one, and I already had plenty of female issues.

I had one done about 6 years ago.

I had alot of female issues after DD was born. It didnt work. I didnt have any additional problems, it just never resolved what I had it done for.

I do remember Gyn saying NOT to use it as a form of birth control though.

I think Gynecologists push for this procedure b/c they can do it themselves, in office, which means more money for them. There is a ton of bad press and lawsuits against Essure. No way would I do that. There are other options.

I looked into this, and got scared. Lots of bad press, not enough testing. Many people are allergic without realizing it and it causes a lot of problems, both female and emotional- I know someone suffering from issues with the Essure and is now suffering from horrible depression. My gyno recommended a tubal after my last child, tbh, my research on that wasn't very appealing either. I don't know what to do. Unfortunately my husband is unwilling to get a vasectomy.

I wanted to do this but my insurance wouldn't cover it. I had a tubal instead and have been happy with the recovery and results.

Thanks for the replies.

I have heard that Erin Brokovich is trying to get it taken off of the market.

I think I'll just have to see what other options my gyn has for me.

Why won't your dh get snipped? Perhaps you could compile some info on how much safer and less possible complications a vasectomy involve. My bil was snow boarding 2 days later. My dh had about a 3 week recovery to get him to 100% from his but it was an army doc that messed up. You had the babies he could do this for you. For my dh it was a love/respect thing. The complications for men are so much less than that for women that he volunteered because it was the safest way to do things.

My sister and several friends have it and are happy. One friend the one tube has not scarred over yet (rare) but she is still happy. IMHO the man should man up and get snipped...but my friends and sister their spouses refused so they did it. They are happy with the result. Each had a different co-pay based on insurance coverage.

Im sorry I just cant understand this.

So completely disrespectful

I agree with you but it's really common how many men won't get snipped. My dh did and then we reversed it. His vasectomy was easy-peasy (really don't think he took anything more than Advil) but the reversal was pretty bad and the recovery was very long. But we had 2 more babies so it was all worth it.

After my 4th, I opted for a tubal. It was months after the delivery and I was having laproscopic surgery to remove endometriosis. The entire surgery was very easy and I recovered very quickly. I've not had any problems from my tubal.

I had the Essure procedure done earlier this year. My insurance covered almost everything. There was a copay for the follow up.

Personally, I love it. I have not had any pain. Though I will say that I had a very very rare experience in that one of the "plugs" came out. The company did give me another for free and my doc did the procedure again for free. I go on Friday to make sure that the second attempt took. I really really hope it did! And I am happy to be off birth control since I am getting older.

I did the research and new the risks before ever talking to my doctor about it. She has a good record of doing them and answered all of my questions. She also asked a lot of questions to make sure that I knew what I was doing and that I really wanted it done. She wanted no regrets afterwards.

Why can't you stay on the pill? My DH has had a vasectomy. I am 44 and still on the pill to stop my periods. Have not had to deal with a period for years. I also have a small fibroid and the hormones in the pill keep it from growing quickly.

I totally get that it is a reality for many women that their DH's won't get a V. There are a lot of things my DH will or won't do that other women just don't understand.

However, on this one I felt very strongly and pretty much told my DH that no V = no nookie. He did get one and for him the procedure and recovery was actually pretty miserable. Nothing like what I went through to bear three children, though.

I personally would be highly uncomfortable taking any hormonal BC after about age 40. At that point the risks outweigh the benefits, IMO. This would include, pills, shots, the Nuvaring and Mirena to a lesser extent . . .

For what it's worth, we did do fertility monitoring for six years to prevent pregnancy and it worked. Boy was it a pain though. I still vaguely use it as a back up. During my couple of days of peak fertility DH and I don't take the risk, even though he's had a V.

I had Essure done last month, after several years of research. My husband was not willing to get a vasectomy. It was absolutely easy! I was in and out in an hour or less, including payment time. I had some minor bleeding and pretty much nonexistent cramping. The worst thing was the Xanax pill they prescribed to be taken before the procedure. It made me loopy... Had I known, I would have skipped it. I go back in march to make sure my tubes are blocked.

I had been on the pill for a very long time. Any time I stop and plan pregnancy, I get pregnant immediately. I just didn't want to take the pill forever. That led me to proceed with Essure.
