Escape from the North - A Week at the Yacht Club - April 2015- Complete* 1/5

So before I get into my next update I have some scary RL news with a happy ending.

I would have been back here sooner with the udpate I was working on but Sammy had an accident Thursday night on the playground. He fell off some equipment and his brother landed on top of him. He was in so much pain I rushed him to the hospital and he was diagnosed with a lacerated liver.

He was eventually allowed to eat again and walk around. He was discharged this afternoon and will recover fully. Kids are remarkably resilient! He just has to take it easy for several weeks - no gym, no playround, no bike riding, etc.

It's really a good thing kids are tough! I remember falling out of trees and more than once down the stairs (and an escalator ) as a kid and being totally fine. If I did it now I would probably die!

So when we last left off I was in France enjoying an adult beverage. ​

I was always underestimating how long it would take to get somewhere by bus but overestimating how long it would take us to walk somewhere. We had a lot of time to kill. ​

I always do this too! "We're walking? Well, better set off an hour early"

Somehow Sam managed to drop his sunglasses over the rail and onto ground near the tracks. They and some other boys quickly began to hatch a plan to retrieve them. Knowing this probably wouldn't end well I ran to grab an official Disney giant to handle the retrieval.​

This reminds me of a story my DM told me from when I was a toddler, she took me to this miniature town park place and they had this mini railway you could ride around the park on. Well, me being me (even as a child) I fell over the barrier and down a hilly bit onto the tracks a bit like this:


In my little onesie! I had to be rescued before the next train came past! Lesson learned: Don't mess with trains however small they are!

After dinner we walked back to the YC through International Gateway. It was a beautiful night and I took some pics of the World Showcase at dusk.

Great Epcot day. Again...sorry about the not so fun dinner companions...sigh. I can't imagine how nice it must have been to be able to just walk back to your resort after a long day. I guess that is why it costs the big bucks lol. Funny about the lost sunglasses. I wonder what would have happened if the kids had gotten to execute their own retrieval plan....

It was a great day and so nice to be within walking distance. Yeah, it would have definitely included more rule breaking and CM scoldings.

I'm glad he's okay. Sounds like a bad scare, but kids are great at recovering.

Kids bounce back so quickly.

Yeah, I love getting the cute Mickey sketch, but I wish it came with a discount!

I keep hoping to get those coveted discount codes from Disney but nothing yet.

Sorry to hear dinner wasn't great ... it's never fun when you have to share a table with people who aren't having a good time!

Definitely some rule breaking for sure. It could be so much fun with the right table companions.

Sounds like a good day, even if it wasn't exactly as planned. As long as you had a good time, that's all that matters!

I was definitely going out of my mind and there were some moments where I was close to losing my composure but I held it together. Now that I look back at it I'm surprised at how well I handled it. I trusted my instincts even though I couldn't see where he was hurt and it's a good think I did.

"Can't... continue.... go... on... without... me...."

So dramatic. He will sprawl on the floor anywhere. Luckily they keep even the ground pretty clean at Disney.

That's too bad. It's supposed to be a festive, fun atmosphere.

It was a fun atmosphere but not all of us were having fun.

Oh gosh! So sorry to hear about Sammy! So scary when they fall off something like that and you kinda feel helpless - really glad to hear he is doing ok though!

Love the trains in Germany - especially when they add in seasonal decorations like little F&WF booths!

Sorry the meal at Biergarten wasn't better though. Certain things you kinda need to just get into and go along with and sounds like the rest of the people at your table didn't do that .... makes me think of a Jungle Cruise trip where the rest of the boat is not into the puns at all

Yeah. Especially when you can't see where there injured. I had to just trust my instincts since I know my kid and knew things weren't right. I didn't notice any decorations on the trains. Wonder if I missed some stuff. The dinner was awkward but it wasn't terrible. Yeah, I've experienced those Jungle cruises.

Oh no! Will definitely keep Sammy in our prayers for a full recovery.

I agree with over-estimating time in the world Showcase. We always leave time before we have to be somewhere, but when it gets down to it we always have extra time. I mean it's like we leave 30 minutes to look around a country and it feels like we have been looking around forever and it has really only been like 10 minutes. We must not look detailed enough!

Thank you. Sam is on his way to being fully recovered. That's what we did, left ourselves time to look but didn't look enough.

I know. The doctors were telling me that if an adult had the same injury they would have had to have surgery.

They were also concerned about his pancreas but an MRI a few days later ruled that out.

He was eventually allowed to eat again and walk around. He was discharged this afternoon and will recover fully. Kids are remarkably resilient! He just has to take it easy for several weeks - no gym, no playround, no bike riding, etc.

Oh wow! I'm glad that everything turned out ok and he's doing fine now. Boys will be boys, I guess and you'll have those spills... but you never expect them to be quite that traumatic!

I was hoping it would be a discount for next fall but no such luck.

That's always a good time killer. I mean if you're going to overestimate your walk and arrive early, there are worse places you could be going.

Thank goodness the Disney giant saved the train tracks and buildings from the invading giants.

It was really busy so we still had a 20 minute wait before we got a table. More detail in my TR if you're interested but it wasn't a fun meal because we shared a table with a group of Debbie Downers and our waitress was not good. It was Jamie's choice and he enjoyed the food so it wasn't a total loss.

Yuck. That stinks. That's kind of one reason that we've stayed away from Biergarten. Well, that, and the fact that there are really just too many restaurants that we want to eat at and it just never has made it's way up near the top of the list. I'm glad the food was at least enjoyable though.

He also figured that there must be a Hidden Mickey in the painting in our room. He was right.

Just found your TR! Your family dynamic sounds awfully similar to ours, based on the first post (I have girls but my youngest just turned 7 and sounds like a very similar personality type). Can't wait to read about your trip, I love the Yacht Club!!

OK so I totally just binge-read (is that even a thing?) all the updates so far, loving your report! Great photos--I'm completely inept when it comes to photography so I have no idea how to edit my pictures to get them to the size yours are. I LOVE all the YC photos, it's my favorite Disney resort so far My kids loved looking for Hidden Mickeys so I'll make sure to look for them in the carpet this time (we missed them last trip--guess that's why they're called "hidden" )

Thanks for the Illuminations FP review--I was back and forth on whether to do that one. I love that show, it's actually my favorite one. I think we'll stick with finding a spot around the lake again

AK for Earth Day! I love this park--interestingly enough, my love for it has absolutely nothing to do with the animals though. I can totally relate about kids melting down--my youngest was in full whinefest mode our whole trip :/ Ending the day in the quiet pool is just the best

I sympathize with the Stitch stuffie "army"--Alyssa, my younger daughter, is obsessed with Stitch; this started shortly before our trip and she came home with a giant Stitch AND a regular sized Stitch. She has since added Pirate Stitch and a Stitch Tsum Tsum to the collection. I have nightmares about being buried alive in stuffed animals. I had a similar Splash experience--my oldest and my husband rode it and I was excited to use Rider Swap on it but then she decided she didn't want to ride it again Love the GF pics, we haven't visited that one yet! I love that the boys want to stay at the "fancy hotel" lol. Merida's answer to your hair dilemma is hilarious. Bear grease We loved CHH--and yeah it's amazing how picky kids suddenly become interested in food when it's YOURS. Awesome MSEP pics--I haven't seen this one yet, and I think it just looks so gorgeous.

Loving all the topiary pics. One day I MUST go during Flower and Garden. I just love those. We had a similar reaction to Biergarten--it was okay, but the people at our table weren't super friendly, which kind of takes away the appeal of community tables

Earth day was a nice surprise. Sammy definitely enjoyed himself most of the time but his tantrums were epic.

We came home with the medium sized stitch, a small, and a mini Stitch as well as pirate Stitch. Sorry you missed out on Splash. I was surprised my boys were so fancy.

Thank you. We finally found a contractor and we're about to sign the contract. We'll be doing new siding, entry doors, a new porch and garage door. It will be a whole new house when we're finished! Now I have to pick a color.

Day 5
Hollywood Studios Part 1

I was really looking forward to this day for a couple of reasons. My dear friend was going to be meeting us at Hollywood Studios to hang out for the day. Also, I was hoping the boys would be able to sign up for Jedi Training. It was EMH at HS that morning so we were up and on our way at about 7:30. We headed to the boat dock for the ride over to HS.

While we were waiting for the boat the boys were running around the dock. They weren't harming anyone so I didn't think much of it. At one point Aidan fell and acted like he'd hurt his leg. Full on rolling around on the ground holding his leg. It was obviously an act, he was laughing and making his brother laugh. So this older woman with a toddler - maybe her grandchild - tells the child, "That's why you shouldn't run, you could get hurt" in a very disapproving voice.

BEGIN RANT: It bugs me when people use my kids as examples of what not to do. Kids shouldn't run? How ludicrous is that? I got the same thing after Sammy fell at the playground. Some of the other moms used his accident as a lesson about what happens when you "rough house." I won't be surprised if the zip line disappears from the playground. We can't wrap our kids in bubble wrap. Play is good for them. END RANT

Before too long we were on the boat and headed to Hollywood Studios. I didn't take any pictures because I was on a mission: find Jedi signups. I wish I'd taken the time to get a picture of the Chinese theater at the entrance but I completely dropped the ball. We had to ask directions a couple times but we found it. Before too long we got a time - 11:50 with orders to return at 11:20.

With that completed we headed out to find something to do. We walked past the "Hall of Fame" busts and Jamie asked me to take this picture:

We made our way over to Center Stage and saw Goofy and Pluto meeting. Sam wanted to add to his signatures so we got in line.









After these fun meets we got in line for:



The ride didn't open until 9 so we were some of the first in line. It meant waiting 10 minutes or so for the ride to open but we would be among the first into the attraction. The boys were a little annoyed that they had to wait.



But once the ride opened at 9 we went right into the theater for the pre-show or whatever you call it where they show you clips of different movies. Then we were let in and were the first car/boat/vehicle of the day.

I took some pics but I'll just share one that I don't think gets a lot of love.





Since we were the first group of the day the end of the ride was funny because the other vehicle at the end was empty but the CMs had to act out the whole thing anyway.

After the ride we decided to grab breakfast. Knowing that Starring Rolls was the only QS breakfast option we headed that way. I was surprised at the lack of savory items available but we all ended up getting bagels with cream cheese so that was fine.

After breakfast we had some time before our TSMM FP so we stopped for a PP.





I don't know if this is a joke or what but it makes me laugh.

Good day so far...totally know what you mean about people not wanting kids to ...behave like kids. It's getting totally ridiculous. You are lucky to have gotten Jedi training...were there a lot of people before you even getting there that early? I wonder if my DD would be into that...probably more of a boy thing...but who knows.... I think TSMM is what I look forward to most at DHS because I've never been on it. But TGMR looks fun too...haven't done that in years...too bad it didn't open until 9am though even on EMH day...oh well.

Ugh. For 2 reasons:
1 - Even if he actually was hurt ... one kid getting a little hurt being a kid isn't necessarily a reason not to do it
2 - Don't run, you could get hurt ... why don't you just lock yourself in a box? Kids need to run, and play around ... and if they get hurt, they learn to do things a little differently. Kids don't learn what will hurt them by hearing someone say it. They learn it by getting hurt. Would it be better if kids didn't get hurt? Sure. But these things happen, and you can't stop them from living life.
And I say this not even being a parent ... it bugs me when parents don't let their kids play around.
(Although, I would just like to mention that kids should be considerate of their surroundings and not run/play in a place where it will cause great disruption to others)

We saw this in November.
I guess having a picture of Baymax is more important than having a picture of your family. And besides, who doesn't want a giant Baymax in their family picture!

Yeah, the only time I tell kids not to run is, say, at the pool. Cuz it's slippery and hard if you fall. Or, like, in the library, cuz it isn't appropriate library behavior. Or if they are getting in people's way. But, yeah, I hate when people use my kids as a cautionary tale when they aren't doing anything wrong!

Oh, and just this morning, a friend of mine posted a photo on fb of a baby helmet thing - the next best thing to wrap your baby in bubblewrap!!!

Thank you. I didn't use a flash. I think I got lucky with the lighting on the attraction. There was also an external light on the camera that helped a little.

I totally agree with you. I would have stopped them if I thought they were disturbing others but they were on the other side of the dock away from the crowd that was waiting for the next boat. I guess they were disturbing her but it wasn't because they were in her space.

I love this picture. This is why Pluto is one of my favorites - he gets so into it!

I love it, too. This was a MM photo so another big plus for MM.

We saw this in November.
I guess having a picture of Baymax is more important than having a picture of your family. And besides, who doesn't want a giant Baymax in their family picture!

There were some other photos without Baymax but I thought this was so funny. When I first saw it I couldn't believe it. Was it a mistake or a joke? I posted it above but there was also a video so I think it was just a still from the video.

Yeah, the only time I tell kids not to run is, say, at the pool. Cuz it's slivppery and hard if you fall. Or, like, in the library, cuz it isn't appropriate library behavior. Or if they are getting in people's way. But, yeah, I hate when people use my kids as a cautionary tale when they aren't doing anything wrong!

Oh, and just this morning, a friend of mine posted a photo on fb of a baby helmet thing - the next best thing to wrap your baby in bubblewrap!!!

I'm the same way. I don't want them running in quiet places or disturbing people but they were on the other side of the dock away from others who were waiting for the boat. It feels like a passive agressive way of telling me they don't agree with my parenting. So annoying.

I wonder if I saw the same thing on fb - it was a decorated helmet. I thought those helmets were for babies who have flat heads from always being on their back.

Finally caught up after reading 14 pages! I'm hooked. Really looks like you guys had an amazing trip and I can't wait to read more. I love the idea of getting your boys hats signed... Better than an autograph book that will ultimately get filed away. I can see my DBF getting his hat signed when I mention it, he's a big kid at heart
