They're godless, and proud of it.
On Saturday, America's atheists, freethinkers and humanists will flex their political muscle in the first Godless Americans March on Washington.

Atheist Edwin Kagin, of Union, one of 23 scheduled speakers, thinks it will be a watershed event in the history of American free thought.

Why they're marching
Statement of principles of the Godless Americans March on Washington.
• Equal rights for atheists, freethinkers and other "godless Americans," including fair treatment and protection in the work place, when seeking public office and when giving testimony in court.

• End to discrimination in groups which receive "public funds and special entitlements," such as the Boy Scouts of America. "Belief must not be a litmus test for inclusion in such groups," the group says.

• No harassment in public schools, including no organized prayer, no teaching of creationism and no student-led prayer.

• No use of government tax money to subsidize religion, faith-based social programs "and other entitlement schemes."

• Inclusion of atheists when leaders rally the nation. "Our leaders, including the president, must stop calling the nation to prayer, or claim that we are a `Christian' country," the group says.

• No more display of religious mottoes or symbols on government property, especially public schools. Restore "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of Many, One) as the nation's motto.

"This is the first time non-believers have had the courage to get out of the closet," said Kagin. "Most of them are scared to say anything."

American Atheists President Ellen Johnson, the march chairwoman, called it a chance for some of the 30 million Americans who profess no religion to gather and demand "a place at the table" — a role in public policy making.

"We're following the path of every other cause movement in the country," Johnson said.

As in previous marches on Washington by Christians, black Americans and mothers against handguns, plans are for the godless ones to assemble on the National Mall at 11 a.m. They will then walk to the area west of the Capitol for speeches and entertainment.

Kagin plans to talk about Camp Quest, the summer camp for children of non-believers that he directs.

Bellevue resident and Camp Quest board member Bob Riehemann and his two daughters plan to march, possibly behind a Camp Quest banner.

It's hard to organize atheists and freethinkers because they tend not to be joiners, Riehemann said, and that's one reason why the march is a good idea.

"A show of unity is one way to make an impression on a politician," Riehemann said.

Other scheduled speakers include Michael Newdow, the California attorney who sued over the "under God" phrase in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Mount Lookout resident Joe Levee, the founder of a local free-thought group called The Free Inquiry Group, had planned to attend the march, but backed out because of other commitments.

"I feel that it's certainly something that should be happening," he said of the march. "Most of us who are atheists and agnostics, we feel that we are discriminated against in the work place and in the media and by the government."

It's no secret that U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and President Bush favor the religious right, Levee said, and do things that don't help atheists or agnostics.

He said he tried to charter a bus to the march for Columbus and Cincinnati residents, but couldn't find enough people who planned to go.

More than 150 organizations have endorsed the march, including some whose support most atheists might not want.

They include the Order of Perdition and the United Satanic Covenire, two Satanist groups. Some within the godless fold argue that Satanism is a religion, and doesn't belong in a gathering of non-believers.

Johnson, however, has taken the position that as long as a group agrees with the march's statement of principles, it can endorse the march.

Kagin agrees. "My view is that an idea is not responsible for the people who endorse it," Kagin said. "If they endorse the principles, I don't care who is in the march."

The United Satanic Covenire responded to the controversy in an open letter to atheists posted on its Internet site.

It included a promise that no one in the group would show up Saturday wearing pentagrams or other occult paraphernalia.

Kagin feared that the controversy would give people the idea that all atheists are Satanists, which isn't true. He said reading the letter helped him feel better about the group.

"This is planned to be a march of dignity, not to shock anybody, of responsible citizens telling the government they have the same rights as the snake-handlers-for-Jesus types," Kagin said.

If you believe in Satan, you must believe in God. There isn't any getting around it.

They should be scared. I have no doubts they face a fiery eternity.

Of course they have the right to march.

(edited so as not to confuse or start a fight on rights)

*sigh*.....this post didn't make it too long before somebody pulled the "you are going to hell" routine.

I don't see how a comment like that is any different than Eros making an atheist comment on someone's Christian thread. But we all know there is a double standard with some posters on this board.

Of course they have the "right" to march. [/B]
What do you mean by that? Why is "right" in quotes?

JMO Silver Lily. To which we are entitled. That's been drilled into all of us here. Sorry, I didn't realize this was an athiests only thread. Oh and by the way, I didn't say anyone here was going to hell. If there is a hell, and I believe there is, athiests will go there. Sorry if my Christianity offends/threatens, or whatever. I'll just continue to have my opinion and believe it or not, pray for the best for you.

I've gone back to remove my quotes so as not to confuse you. It wasn't meant for those reasons. I'm sure it's not confusing to all.

JTB, not only impotent, but probably blind and unable to see that fine female of hell! That's probably what hell is all about, don't ya think? Torturing those with what they can never have?

I understand that is your opinion, CRB#33, and I couldn't care less what you think about atheists. But everybody gets in an uproar when a non-believer posts something on a Christian thread, but yet here you are saying that atheists are going to hell. And you know full well there are atheists on this board, so you are pretty much telling them they are going to hell, even if you didn't name anyone by name.

And I never said that this was an atheist-only thread. I just think it is very rude to tell people that they are going to hell, which you did. I think when someone says something like that, they give christianity a bad name.

I still think there is another meaning to your comment about them having the right to march. Why else did you put quotes around "right" and also add the lovely rolleyes?

How can it be possible for it to be rude to tell an athiest they are going to hell when they don't even believe in the place????? I didn't tell them to go there!!!

And if there is a God and there is a hell, it is a fact that a person who doesn't believe in God will end up there. And I think that every athiest knows it. It's a fact, not an insult. If they think it's an insult, then they must have some belief in the place and they should be rethinking their beliefs. I'm not trying to insult one single person. I know you think I am because I am well aware of what you think of me.

I will never be able to change that. I don't even care to keep trying.

Gotta disagree with you there. We don't know that for a FACT. Nobody has ever been and come back with news footage. God, with his infinite mercy, made allow everyone to share in the Kingdom. We just don't know. :)

Ok.....let me explain it to you. It is rude because even though an atheist doesn't believe in hell, you do.

Compare it to me telling you that you are stupid and irrational because you believe in a higher being. Yeah, YOU may not believe what I said, but it is still rude of me to say it. It doesn't matter if it is true or not. It is still rude, and I should keep that kind of belief to myself.

But that is the double standard when dealing with Christians like you.....it is ok for you to insult me, but I cannot insult you.

I'm not sending people to hell here but don't you think from reading the Bible that everyone doesn't go to Heaven? The Bible is very plain about how a person is allowed into Heaven. It is even plain about how YOU can KNOW for sure if you are going there or not. No, no one has come back and told us anything. But, if you believe what the Bible says about it, it is quite plain. I'm sure if people could come back from either place and share with us that this world would be a different place.

The bible was written so long ago. What if God has changed his mind? What if, as humanity evolves, God decides to change the rules? He may decide to let anyone in who has lived a decent, moral life. The point is....nobody knows.

getting back to the OP, i will be going this weekend, and i have been planning on going for months. :)

That does it, I'm heading to the...what is it called now... hell, we'll just call it the Chistian Board, and give my opinions on the posts there as a non-Christian and when they get upset saying I could just ignore the thread I will refer them here. ;)

I'm with Silverlilly, what CRB#33 posted was very rude.

If you're referring to the Circle of Life board, cardaway, sorry, you won't be able to post there. That board is now in a read only format.
