If they come at you w/ pitocen to help you along you will be screaming for the epidural...just MHO. I thought I wanted to get to 7cm then get the epi - but they gave me pitocen & I never felt pain like that - no way was I going to be in pain - what for?

I am crazy afraid of needles too, but I wanted to feel no pain.

I did it twice with pit and no drugs I also did it twice with the epidural (yes 4 inductions my body is labor defective)transition is the worst... 7-10cm its like you want to die after that its a piece of cake..

3 kids....3 inductions....3 epidurals. When asked I always recommend it, esp. with pitocin.
My kids are happy and healthy....except the 16 year old is grounded and cranky. Otherwise it's all good!

I didn't want one, but ended up having one with my DD....and it didn't work.

I didn't want one and didn't have one. I would have been open to one if things got really really bad, though ... there is no reason to be a hero. It wasn't that bad and for the record I am a total pain wuss.

I do think that doctors have "medicalized" (OK, that's not a real word!) giving birth. Certain procedures and drugs have become the norm instead of what is done when it's medically necessary. I watched A Baby Story while I was pregnant and almost every single one of the moms were "helped along" with pitocin followed up with an epidural. Standard Operating Procedure.
