Epic novel. Please help me find one to read

I just finished Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the second part of the trilogy in 2012.

And I agree with all the other posters who suggested The Thorn Birds and Forever Amber.

War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk is the sequel to Winds of Was and was also great.

First thought was Shogun, but that's been suggested. Second thought was the "Song of Ice and Fire" series, which has already been mentioned. I also agree with several other lists here. So, for those epics which haven't already been pegged:

The Aubrey/Maturin Series by Patrick O'Brian (21 novels set during the Napoleonic wars that I cannot reccomend enough)

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet (I know it's had a resurgence of interest recently, but I read it a looong time ago)

The Killer Angels, Gods and Generals, The Last Full Measure by Michael and Jeff Shaara (the first is a work of art, the other two are worth a read if you like Civil War stuff)

The Illiad, the Oddessy and the Aeneid (the original epics)

I haven't read that one yet, didn't even know about it. Now I have to add it to my list and get it!!!

OP, just about anything from James Michener is an excellent read.

Hawaii
Centennial
Texas
Chesapeake
Alaska (not my favorite, but still pretty good)
Caribbean

Lonesome Dove triology

Roots and Queen by Alex Haley

The Dark Tower series, also called the gunslinger books by Stephen King

Can't think of anymore, but what a great thread. Found some more books to add to the ever growing list. :thumbsup2
