Epcot sign gone from ball...

I didn't mind the wand and sign, but they should have made it a photo opp from the side instead of building that monstrosity. Glad the view's improved.

I only wish they'd remove the cemetary headstones...I mean Fan Photo monuments. I was tempted to bring in a black-rose wreath to hang on one, but it was May, not October, so I figured it wouldn't be appreciated.

The monuments are creepy (esp. the photo ones) and it's easy to lose sight of a little one in that pseudo-graveyard.

The "EPCOT" sign and wand were removed in 2007 as part of an agreement between Siemens (the current sponsor of Spaceship Earth) and Disney.

I need to remember to send Siemens a "Thank you" card. I didn't like the wand at all - I thought it was too gaudy. Spaceship Earth looks perfect on it's own.

I also really dislike the Leave a Legacy monstronsities. They make that area too cluttered and they are ugly.

And while we're on the subject, I also don't like the Sorcerers Hat in Hollywood Studios. The hat itself is cute and I wouldn't mind it somewhere else, but I greatly preferred the view of the theater when it was visible to those walking into MGM. I think that located where it is, the hat takes away from the rest of the theming of the area.

I tell you, my family literally cheered and leaped about the living room with joy the day they took that sign down from "the ball"! :rotfl:

To me, it was like leaving the castle hot pink. ;)

The sign was nto classic Epcot. I believe it was added back form Mickey's bday celebration or a Disney Anniversary. It wasn't put on to be there forever. Spaceship Earth, the original, didn't have any ornaments and I personally like it that way. I wouldn't complain about it b/c it does not make or break my vacation if its there or not, but I like the nice clean ball much better.

Everyone has their opinions.

Ditto. I had never seen the ball without words on it and felt like I was missing the "classic" version.

1.)That was my first thought when I read that too!
2.) Don't EVEN get me started on the stupid hat!

You know, at the time, I didn't mind it, but I'm sure glad it didn't stay!!!

My girls just walked by while I was looking at that picture and wanted to know WHAT that was!!! They are not believing that that is the castle!!! It was hard to believe when you were actually there too! :rotfl:

Now that our battle has been won on the "ball" (aka Space Ship Earth) we now need to start complaining about those huge atrocious pieces of rock blocking the view and majesty of SSE as you enter the park. They remind me of gravestones.

Oh Corey, you know how much I hate those things too!

You mean, Pepto Pink?:cutie:
I was fine with the wand and the word. It wasn't something that I really thought either way about. Now the big stones I do not like. I assume they'll never take them down but I think it makes it feel cluttered.

I LOVED the birthday cake castle! I thought it was clever and well done but would not want it to stay. I also think if I didn't go all thet time and that was my first time that I would probably want to see classic disney. Going to DL for the first time I waited until the castle was normal and no construction or anything going on. To me that is a HUGE part of what DL is and I wanted to see it in all it's glory! I assume some feel that way about WDW.
I thought the birthday cake was clever, but I was glad that we had seen it before and knew we would see it again when the birthday cake was gone.

The days we went to the park with the pink castle, we literally saw kids (and a couple of adults) burst into tears when they saw it, they were so disappointed.

I'm with you!!!! Bring back the Epcot sign and Mickey hand!! and I too call it the 'Epcot ball' as do a lot of other people

I'm glad it's gone, before I get there. ;) Ever since I was about 5 years old, and saw commercials for Disney, that "ball" has meant Epcot to me. A clean, beautiful, round beacon of Epcot. Honestly, for many years, I thought the "ball" WAS Epcot, until I got older and figured out it was just one attraction... I can completely see why you were disappointed when the sign left, because I would have been disappointed if the sign had been there. When you KNOW something a certain way, a change can be disheartening.

I have a hard enough time finding a thread from a couple of days ago and it's almost always a newbie that finds these 3 year old threads. Don't get it.

I know right!!! It came up in my subscribed threads and I couldn't believe how old it was!!

I didn't complain, but I thought it was the ugliest thing Disney had done - we own at Boardwalk for DVC and that darned thing kept me away from my balcony. I threw a small party when I heard it went down.

Second ugliest - the gravestones are worse.
You seriously place this:

I actually loved the signage over SSE. I thought it was nice. Maybe I'm just a sucker for all things sparklie (sp?)?

I never saw the cake and wouldn't have had to see it from my balcony. And in pictures, the cake doesn't look as cheap as the Epcot sign did. I always especially liked the nearly ten years of temporary plywood fencing on the walkway to hide the supports. But yeah, that would make the top ten list, too. The gravestones are still the worst.
