Did anybody notice those strange drinking fountains around Epcot. I remember voices speaking to you. Do they still have those? I also recall lit pavement with tiny lights that change as you step on them. What are those called?

Myron,

The lights have something to do with fiberoptics and are located just on the other side of Spaceship Earth as you come through the gates. Between SSE and Mousegear.

as for the talking water fountains.........I have never really experience them but from what I've read/heard, they are the water fountains right under SSE near the rest rooms..........

Good luck.......

Learn something new everyday...

My personal favorite talking item is the talking trashcan in Tomorrowland. We'll have to check out the talking waterfountains, though.

There's also a talking fountain outside the restrooms on the back side of Innoventions facing The Land.

The lights in the sidewalk stay on now. They are not activated by walking on them anymore.

Does anyone know how those lights are made? I'd put them in my backyard. Seriously. I'm sure it's fiber optic cable, but what else?

If you find out let us all know. Those lights were fun when you could step on them and they would light up.

It's pretty low-tech. Basically they are just fiber optic cables embedded in the concrete. You run the other end of the cables back to a light source and bundle them together. You then use a simple light source with a slow moving "color wheel" with acetate colored filters on it and rotate it between the light source and the cable ends. If you want lights to "sparkle", place black spots around each color filter. This is exactly the way that fiber optics displays you see in stores operate.

If you want ones that light up as you step on them, bundle the cables for each tile seperately and give each bundle its own light source. Then use a pressure switch to turn each light off and on.

We found these fountains last month, and we got a big kick out of them. I had read about them on the DIS Boards, of course, but when we walked up to get a drink I didn't realize this was THE fountains until they talked. My younger DS was getting a drink at one, and I was getting a drink at the other, and they both talked to us. I hadn't told DS about them so he was really surprised! We had to go find DH and older DS to show them too!
