I read that the lakes in future world have been drained for refurbishment. Does anyone know if this is true? Has anyone seen the lakes dry? I would really like to see pictures.

I wouldn't really call them 'lakes', they're more like large, tiled pools aren't they? I mean, they're about 2-3 feet deep at the most, right?

DD and I were there last week. The lakes in Future World are dry. Rocks and coins are the only thing in them.

Wow, I can't picture that.

Hey FriarFan! Do you go to PC or did you to go PC? I graduated in '02, Go Friars! :0) (Eat em up, Eat em up, GO PC!) :cool1:

Yes, we were there June 9 - 16, and they were full at the beginning of our trip, and drained at the end, I think right after Flower & Garden Festival ended. It was strange seeing them empty. I assumed they just drained them for a short time to clean up from F&G. Had no idea they'd be drained this long.

Anyone know what they are doing to them? Just routine cleaning/maintenence?

They were drained last week when we were there. It looks like they were working on the monorail columns in them to me. Just some cleaing and maybe painting maitence. Some of the area is blocked off with the disney refurb walls, but other than cleaning and getting the coins, I couldn't imagine they would be doing anything else to them.

If you go to the wdwmagic website and look at July 16th and July 21st, you will see them.

You do understand that these are just the little decorative pools that are surrounded by the sidewalks, right? Not much bigger than a kiddie pool at some water parks.

I can "picture" them empty with no effect in FW much at all. They are nice, but they aren't a major attraction in Epcot.

Now the WS LAGOON... THAT would be something drained of water!

No IllumiNations possible.

We have seen the pools drained before and were surprised by the smell. We learned to stay away from the area during that time.

We were there last week, the "lakes" were dry. My son spotted lots of coins in the one. I must have been blind because all I saw were rocks. We did not notice any smell coming from them.

The smell comes from the fact that many micro organisms live in the water and on the rocks. When the pool is drained the organisms die and decay. The sun purifies the surfaces and bleaches whatever algae and junk (for lack of a more scientific word) that remains.

I doubt that is the reason they were drained. It must have been a maintenance reason but it does help "clean" things up without chemicals.

Agreed. Actually as an AP holder who goes quite often to WDW and namely Epcot, I can say that actually this happens quite often. I notice it a couple of times per year (so obviously it's not a rare occassion).

As this poster said, they are very small, and due to the coloring of the rocks, you may not even notice that they're empty if you are not paying attention.

I think they do it for regular cleaning.

OK.

I give.

What's the fascination and allure of these "puddles" of water that folks here seem to be "awaiting their triumphant return"?

:rotfl2:

I like all of the umpteen-thousands of little details that make Disney the great place that it is, but in the grand scheme of things, these "water holes" don't seem to be very exciting.
They don't even have any on the Mission: Space side of Epcot do they?

Hey, they're aesthetically pleasing, don't hate. ;) But seriously, landscaping has always been a big component of Disney parks.......that's one of many things that separate Disney from other amusement parks, like you said. :goodvibes

yes but, honestly, they're very shallow and the color of the rocks below them makes it hard to even tell from a distance if they have water or not.

Rock on! :teacher: My PC roommate and PC friend are getting married at St. Dominic Chapel next sunday! :-) And...my PC '98 step-brother got married on Saturday by a Dominican from PC (Iriarte Andujar)

Anyhow...yes, they are small blips on the Disney radar, but those puddles are part of the aesthetically pleasing landscape!
