For first timers at the event is there a better day of the week or better week to visit? Should we just go wander and take it all in rather than buying special event tickets?

Weekends are typically a madhouse, weekdays are a little better. If you are there at 11 am when the World Showcase opens, it's much easier to get around before it starts to get crowded.

I agree with the previous post...weekdays are significantly easier than the weekends. Also, the earlier you can go the better the crowds will be. We have never done one of the special events. It's a great time to be in EPCOT, even if you just stroll and nibble!!

Agree with previous posters on weekdays. I wanted to add that WDW holds back tickets to all of the day's food, drink and wine seminars, so if you head to the main F&W building (having a Dopey moment and can't remember the name) you can snap up some reserved day events at reasonable prices ($12 - $15 last year).

Cheers!

Nice.

We are moving the area just as the event opens and we plan to buy the weekday annual pass for residents since we will be retired and can go any day. It seems most special events are on weekends so we will just go and stroll and eat and drink our way through on a few different weekdays.

We do a F&W trip every couple of years. It is significantly more enjoyable for us Monday to Thursday, when crowds can be heavy but never overwhelming. Friday and Saturday can rise to the level of insane. The fun of F&W is strolling the booths, not waiting in line 30 minutes for a small plate.

If we go over a weekend, we will try to book a special event (a Regional Lunch or Wine Dinner) for later on Friday or Saturday, so we have a reservation.

We always do set up some special events. We've done a couple of the cooking demonstrations, a few "Wine Schools" and we always do a wine tasting and cocktail mixology seminar - they are always fun and usually a pretty decent value (especially the $10-15 mini events). Plus it forces us to go up to the Festival Welcome Center which is usually enjoyable.

Did I read somewhere (maybe in a Tips thread...) that there is a soft opening of F&W the day before the scheduled opening? H and I are going childless in September, our last day in the parks is the 18th and we had already planned on spending the afternoon in Epcot....

We had the same situation last year, our last day in the parks was the day before F&W started. We made a point of scheduling to be in Epcot that day so we could enjoy the preview, and it was great, from what we could tell, everything was open, and we enjoyed several booths. My favorite was the griddled greek cheese from the Greece booth! YUM!!
