Let me start out by saying that I am not implying that every cashier of a major retail place does this :)

The last couple of days I've been shopping for something new to wear for an interview on Friday.

Everywhere I go, the cashiers ask if I want to open a credit card and save money. I always so, "No thank you." and the conversation is ususally over.

Recently though, many cashiers are becoming more pushy about opening these accounts  They're kinda like that fly you swat at around your sandwich that refuses to go away

Then today a cashier (what seemed at first a sweet Grandma type) asked me this very question, and I said as normal, "No thank you." She then continued asking me and trying to convince me why I should. I said again, "No thank you, I don't want anymore open lines of credit." She than said, but you can pay the credit card off right now as soon as you use it. I said to her, "That's not the point. I don't want anymore lines of open credit." She said, "You can cancel it right away, and plus, it would really help me out." I said again, "I don't want anymore lines of open credit." She finally let up about that, and then wanted me to sign up to get emails from them. When I said, "No thanks!" she pursed that for another minute. I couldn't believe it!!! :furious:

I almost tempted to call the store manager and tell them that this is such a turn-off to shop there, but I don't want to get the cashier in trouble. I doubt she meant any harm, but holy cow, I'm so tired of everyone wanting me to open a credit card!!!! :furious:

Okay....vent over!!!! :teeth:

I doubt calling a store manager would have done any good. Unfortunately I know several stores that will fire the employee if they don't make their quota of credit card signups. I worked for a store like that...but I refused to push anyone...I was threatened to be fired, so I quit 2 weeks after starting the job.

I closed it but I had an E-mail account ( I have many for different things) just for the sign me ups .

It was .IJUSTSAIDNO@netzero.net.

I think I may have to come up with another one as It's getting bad again everywhere.

I had a a similar experience at Old Navy. The cashier was following me around and wouldn't take no for an answer. I was feeling uncomfortable so walked over to where dh was and said "Hey Dh's name, do you want a credit card?' knowing that he would say no and maybe she'd finally go away. Of course he said no, and her response was "Men don't know anything, they don't buy the kids' clothes!" I was absolutely floored! Not that it was any of her business but dh does know about kids clothes, and was a SAHD for awhile!

We walked away at that point, and later she came up to me in the dressing room where I had dd and said, "Look at all of those clothes, are you sure you don't want to save 10%?"

Most of the time they do just ask once, but I agree that at any store, it makes me uncomfortable. It's not like I can't read the signs, the button on your shirt, etc if I really want to ask about saving 10% and getting a card.

I start explaining what too many open cards and inquiries into your credit report does to your credit score. I can go on for 15 minutes, easily. Some are grateful, as they had no idea how much this hurts your standing. The others just want me to go away before another customer hears me. :thumbsup2

I always find it easier just to say "No thanks, already have one", even if you don't. It saves me from hearing the whole script.

Was this Kohl's?

Theyve been awfully pushy lately.

I was going to say the same thing - Just say "No thanks, already have it - I'm just not going to use it today"

Most cashiers have to do this - their job depends on it....the above statement saves everyone the aggravation

OMG - How did you know that?????

You were behind me in line weren't you? :rotfl2:

Seriously though - yes it was Kohls ::yes::

Upselling in general is getting out of hand.

No, I don't want another credit card, if I wanted a large I would have ordered it, and I especially don't want a magazine subscription to go along with every purchase.

The worst part is the look they give you when you cut them off. I know the question, here is the answer, now let's finish this transaction so you can get to the next customer.

I was in Target the other day and an employee was straightening shelves about 10 feet away. All the sudden some Management type person goes off on a rant over her walkie talkie - I swear anybody within 25 feet of an employee would have heard it.

Anyway, they were 12 credit car apps short on the day and they needed to make it up before 7pm .... OR ELSE.

I agree, it is sad AND annoying.

You know what else is annoying? that magazine sign up ploy you have to go through at Best Buy everytime you buy anything.

Often, part of a cashiers evaluation is on how many credit card sign-ups they get. Therefore, they can be aggressive.

Back in the day (before every little store had credit cards), when I worked at The Limited, part of your evaluation was based on how many "complete outfits" you sold. For example, if you came in to buy a pair of jeans, we would suggest one of the new shirts to go w/it. If that was a no, we'd try a sweater. If that was a no, we'd try socks and earrings. The goal was a complete outfit.

Another thing is that cashiers might be offered an incentive for credit card applications. They might receive $$ per card or their name might go in a drawing for a gift or they might keep track of who has the most and the winner at the end of the month gets something.

Back to the Limited ... we'd get incentives for how many pairs of socks/pantyhose we sold. The gal who sold the most would get $50 in free socks or something like that. One year, it was coats. The store that sold the most winter coats by XYZ date won coats for their employees. My store won that competition and I wound up w/a gorgeous red coat!!!!

I know it's not fun to have credit card offers thrown at you ... but if you know why retailers might be doing it, you'll have a better understanding!

Oh -- be careful w/the "I already have a card"! It backfired on me at Kohl's. I said I had a card and she said "If you give me your license, I'll look it up for you!" I had to think fast and tell her that I didn't have my license on me!!!!! So, be prepared w/that back-up story!!!!

I worked for Kohl's for over a year and refused to ask anyone if they wanted a card. I also refused to get one for myself. It was a factor in my raise, and I was not given a raise due to the fact I had no credit card applications that I pursued.

This frosts my cookies too!

I just went to check out the new Lane Bryant store and no fewer than 6 (!) sales people stopped me on the floor to offer one. And then again with the lady at the desk. I don't even try to make nice anymore. If they ask me more than once, will simply say "No, and please do not continue to offer it".

I always ask them if they want to co sign with me. Shuts them up every time! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I am going to use that line next time!! :rotfl:

What's even more infuriating is finding out that the cashier went ahead and signed you up for a credit card even after you said "no". When our Sam's Club membership came up for renewal last October, the renewal letter stated that my membership dues would automatically be charged to my Sam's Club credit card. What Sam's Club credit card??? The next time I was in our Sam's Club, I went over to the service desk to find out "what up". I found out that I did indeed have a Sam's Club credit card account and that they could reprint my membership card with the CC information. I said "no thanks" and asked how to go about closing the account. You would not believe the hassle that was. I ended up having to tell someone "NO" several times in a phone conversation with the CC department. By the time I left the store, I was angry enough to stop shopping there.

I have to wonder what other revolving charge programs I belong to.

Now I have spent many many (over 15 years) in retail and this kind of thread burns me up. I'm not saying that you are not allowed to be upset but you are taking out your frustration on someone who can't change what they are doing anyway - for fear of no raise, or no hours. If the employees of a store/company are asking too much get the Client Relations number and complain to them. Being rude to the cashier does not stop the fact that they are required to do that. Better response would be to be nice to that person then complain to the corporate office.

Just my two cents.
